Gripping entertainment for Star Wars kids

I don't have that much interest in Star Wars. In fact, I don't think I ever saw this movie when it was released during my childhood. (I think I remember watching one or two of these when I was babysitting...)

Anyway, decades pass, and I have a son who is in raptures over Star Wars. OK. I thought it would be a passing phase, but he's still going strong, so I use Star Wars to encourage reading (and saving money -- he wants the LEGO sets.)

The junior novelizations are great because the movie screenplay unwinds on the page. Awesome. He liked this one very well and has re-read it a half-dozen times. I notice him using more complicated verbs as a result of the books -- that's great.

The books aren't literature, but he did his summer reading list books in June. July was for his own choices. He read for HOURS. SometimesI had to set a timer to tell him when he had to STOP reading and come be part of the family again.

I recommend the books. (175 - 200 pages each)

Star Wars Return of the Jedi

I really enoyed this book by Ryder Windham. The story is about a new Jedi rising to finally confront the emperor and Darth Vader to end the war. The book has humor, action and adventure. My favorite part was when Luke Skywalker battled Boba Fett the vicious bounty hunter.

Just right!!

My 10 yo son wanted this for Christmas. He really likes the Ewoks. He read it within two days, having a hard time putting it down. He is really into many things Star Wars and likes this one. He is now reading the other books. This was a great purchase. I would expect my 8 yo son to pick them up as well to read. The pictures in the middle make this a book for those into Star Wars.

This program is designed primarily for those contemplating marriage, engaged to be married, or newly married. Through an interactive video led by Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott, along with related reading, shared discussion, and participative exercises, couples will master certain life skills that will improve their relationship and help them develop a strong foundation for a marriage that will last a lifetime.

This series is divided into eight sessions. Each session is designed to use approximately 15 minutes of video content (presented by Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott) and approximately 30 minutes of discussion. The video material will serve as a catalyst for discussion and motivation for each couple to do the reading and exercises pertaining to that session’s topic.

Depending on your particular setting you can lengthen or shorten each session to accommodate your specific situation. With this approach you will need to plan your schedule based on how much time you have together and how you can cover the eight video sessions. We suggest eliminating many of the "After the Video" exercises and simply allowing couples to go off and do one of the exercises discussed in that particular session. There is enough material to keep you busy—allow time for processing and relaxation!

Since the books are such an important aspect of this program we suggest including the costs of these with the registration fee and giving each couple the necessary resources when they arrive at the retreat.

Helpful in leading a couple or group through the curriculum

This is a pretty helpful guide if you're leading one couple or a group of couples through the Saving Your Marriage curriculum. I wouldn't consider it a necessity though. A lot of it is fluff that we didn't end up following. But it's good to have as a framework for your time reviewing each chapter.

Zen in the art of writing . . .

Waking up in America. Natalie Goldberg weaves a wonderful book based on the details of her life and times. At the same time, this book is perhaps the most interesting explanation of Zen practice that I've read in a long time. By weaving her own story of Zen practice with the principles of writing and giving vision to how each is connected to the other, Goldberg draws the reader into an appreciation of both disciplines.
I found myself mourning just as she described herself to be at the loss of Kitigari Roshi. Somehow, Goldberg had gotten me to be as much in love with Roshi as she, and so the loss was real when she described the events leading up to and then his actual death. But that is exactly what she tries to explain in the Long Quiet Highway, that we have to experience now, and be open to the present fully, unconditionally. The beauty of this book is that it not only explains in mere words the principles she espouses, but it elicits those feelings directly through the very words we are reading.
Easy insight comes also from her teaching experiences. That is not to imply that the lessons learned were easy for Ms. Goldberg, but rather that her word pictures make it easy for the reader to understand and visualize what actually happened, what lights went on with the students, and how she managed to make that happen. I thought that I would perhaps be a bit bored with this, her fourth book for me, but I could not have been more incorrect.
This book has inspired me to go back and re-read some of the Zen texts I've collected. At the same time, it has encouraged me to make time for my own writing practice - no excuses, no postponing, just do it.

This little book is big.

I recently read this book as part of the required reading for a university course on Zen. Understand that I'm no stranger to Zen philosophy, have sat and talked with monks, and have studied Buddhism for years. However, for me, this book provided a wonderful and necessary insight: practical application. It lets the reader see precisely how Zen can be incorporated into the lives of an "everyday individual" such as Natalie Goldberg. One might think of it as a case study on the practical application of Zen. I did.
I was also sad that the book ended. Then I recognized the sadness and laughed: All things are impermanent. Therefore it is fitting that the story came to an end. However, the lesson which this book embarks upon need not end with the closing of its covers...
Why should one read this book? If one is interested in Zen, read it. If one is interested in New Mexico, read it. If one is interest in writing, read it. If one is interested in the cultural transformation of America, read it. More importantly, if one is interested in life, READ IT.
This little book is big.

This book documents Natalie's journey with Zen & writing. It is honest and straight forward. There are many valueable lessons to be learned from this book. It deals with life, death, divorce, personal growth & empowerment. This book is a discourse with life in simple clarity. As others have said this is a book you will read more than once.

He convincingly implicates the police, criminal elements, members of Aligarh's business community, and many of its leading political actors in the continuous effort to "produce" communal violence. Much like a theatrical production, specific roles are played, with phases for rehearsal, staging, and interpretation. In this way, riots become key historical markers in the struggle for political, economic, and social dominance of one community over another.

In the course of demonstrating how riots have been produced in Aligarh, Brass offers a compelling argument for abandoning or refining a number of widely held views about the supposed causes of communal violence, not just in India but throughout the rest of the world. An important addition to the literature on Indian and South Asian politics, this book is also an invaluable contribution to our understanding of the interplay of nationalism, ethnicity, religion, and collective violence, wherever it occurs.

Unbelivably Specific

Amazing, if dense, work describing the production of Hindu-Muslim violence. He shifts somewhat drastically from the rest of the foray in his field by changing the methodology of interpreting riots in India. This is to say that he views the causes of riots in India as a analytical quagmire and, instead, chooses to focus on how riots are produced rather than why. A very impressive work with an astounding amount of research. Congratulations.

this book is a valuable asset for any sociologist and specifically people of inidan origin. Mr. Brass is a scholar par excellence and has shown is schlorship throughout his book. The conflicts between Hindus and muslims are very real and serves the purpose of vested intrests. I hope more people read this book and understand the politics of relgion

Not a good digital edition

I was very disappointed with the digital edition of the book. The book itself is probably a 4. But the digital edition is pretty bad. My main complaint: the secondary text color is light blue. So light, in fact, that it can barely be seen. It made reading very difficult. Accounting, something that already takes tremendous concentration to understand, now was even harder.

Complaint 2: The publisher did not bother to get permission to republish many figures in the digital edition. If the digital edition was half price, it wouldn't be a big deal. But digital was full price, even for an older edition.

The only reason I got the digital version is because I really don't want to add to my already large text book collection (I keep text books because they are excellent for reference information and sources for research). If you don't have a preference between digital and physical, DO NOT BUY THIS.

Best Sleeping Pill Ever

Overall this is dry reading and one of the most boring books I have ever read. There are some interesting spots, but they are few and far between. I like the layout of the questions and cases studies because they helped to determine how well I was grasping the information. i do like how the various ratios are all in either front or back cover of the book.

Unless you are a CPA, this book has a lot of verbiage and not a lot of explanation. Of course I took my course online but nonetheless, book is in need a supplement, which the other book provides for little cost.

Applied International Trade (2nd edition) is an indispensable book to have on the bookshelf, not gathering dust, if one is to become acquainted with the "state of the art" in the field of International Trade, both from a theoretical and empirical viewpoint. The authors make an important effort to convey the essential and very up-to-date information, be the traditional theories and the empirical evidence associated with them, be the most recent ones, in a clear and direct manner, without sacrificing academic rigor. They intensively resort to the use of graphs and equations to present the material in a natural way, and devote time and pages to expounding data methods, techniques and empirical facts that do the job of enticing the reader. This is an outstanding tome particularly suitable for your advanced undergraduate and graduate trade courses. At last, a competitor to prof. Feenstra's Advanced International Trade!

Great Explanation & Concrete Examples of Asset Allocation

I was pretty impressed with this book. I give it an A+.

I have been a student of investing and financial planning since 1979. In 1978, when Venita VanCaspel's book The New Money Dynamics was published, the term "asset allocation" was not even listed in the index of financial terms. She doesn't really mention asset allocation between asset classes and any benefits of asset allocation.

Gary Brinson's 1986 famous study can be defined as the birth of asset allocation. He found that over 90% of a portfolio's return can be determined by the asset classes used, not what the individual investments were. Brinson's findings have been relatively slow to flow through the investment community and to individual investors. Dial the time clock ahead from 1986 to 2006, and one of Business Week's cover stories seeks to explain why the S&P 500's profits have increased dramatically over the last 5 years, yet the S&P 500 companies have had very little stock price appreciation. One explanation offered is that more and more investors practice asset allocation and choose other investments besides the S&P 500 for their portfolios. The increased demand for other asset classes like foreign stocks, commodities, and gold has subsequently less to a decrease in demand for large cap stocks in the S&P 500.

Ferri's book does an excellent job of explaining the concept of asset allocation and he uses real life portfolios to illustrate the advantages of asset allocation.

Ferri points out the ideal investments to add to one's portfolio would be negatively correlated to the investments in the existing portfolio. He also points out that the correlations between asset classes changes over time. If an investor keeps many different asset classes in his portfolio, the investor can take advantage of these changing correlations over time.

All-in-all, a great book for learning the concept of asset allocation. I would suggest companion books to supplement this book including The Richest Man in Babylon, Bogle on Mutual Funds, The Millionaire Next Door, The 4 Pillars of Investing, A Random Walk Down Wall Street, and the Coffeehouse Investor.

All About Asset Allocation

My fee-only financial planner recommended that I read this book in preparation for my annual review of investments. He offered to buy back the book if I was dissatisfied. I found the book valuable and therefore did not take him up on his offer.

I appreciated Ferri's clear explanation of the concepts of asset allocation accompanied by plenty of data tables and graphs. I also found his technique of limiting each chapter to three or four topics and stating them both and the beginning and end of the chapter very helpful in reviewing what I had learned.

Although the topic is complex, Ferri kept his text at the layperson level. It definitely gave me a better understanding of the Modern Portfolio theory principles my financial planner was following in determing my personal asset allocation.

Although I have the services of a planner, the book provides enough information for the do-it-yourself type to set up their own plan based on the principles of the book. A particularly nice touch is a list of funds that meet specific asset allocation goals at the end of each chapter explaining that asset class.

Another Winner from Richard Ferri

This latest book from Richard Ferri, CFA, has all the elements needed to help an investor develop and implement an asset allocation strategy. The book covers the nuts and bolts and provides lots of supporting graphics. In addition, the author provides recommended portfolios for those in various stages of the investment cycle, as well as for investors with varying degrees of risk tolerance (aggressive, moderate or conservative). This book has something for both novices and more sophisticated investors alike. It's a winner!

Thousands of letters and messages have been left at the Vietnam Memorial Wall since its dedication in 1982, many preserved by the National Park Service as part of a planned museum collection. Palmer, who worked in Saigon as a reporter in the early '70s, found and interviewed many of the people who left them. The resulting book combines the messages with the comments of those who wrote them, and one would have to look far to find a work that stirs deeper emotions. Reading it is a cathartic experience rather than a depressing one. The bodies of the fallen are buried elsewhere, but as far as the surviving family members, friends and comrades are concerned, the spirits of the dead seem to dwell in and around the monument itself. Journalist Palmer delved through the warehouse where letters and other memorabilia left at the Vietnam Memorial in Washington are preserved, and after much detective work, traveled around America to interview these letter-writers. The actual letters are reprinted in this moving book, together with a photograph of those departed. Then the letter-writers discuss their grief, the "shrapnel in the heart," embedded forever. Often hard to read, this is a heartbreaking reminder of the consequence of war. Sal Lopes's The Wall: images and offerings . . . (LJ 11/15/87) is a more visual record. Very highly recommended. I wish all young people had to read this!

I read this book for a college history course and until now have thought very little about war, military, or world politics. Young people today rarely understand or realize what goes with becoming a soldier. This book gives real images of the devastation war brings from the people who lived through the tragedy of losing their loved ones. It opens our eyes to things we just shouldn't close our eyes on.

Buy this book and change your outlook on Nam forever. If you ever valued the boy next door, your son , or daughter you will want this book as a bed side companion to re-read again and again. Each story is a man lost, a mother in pain, a comrade who mourns . It paints the picture that we will be reliving for the men of Afganistan/Irag times. The book will be relevent for time immortal. At,6'3 and 320 lbs of old warrior ,
this book took me back and immersed me into the turbulent past times of my life. To damn up my tears , it would have been like holding back a hurricane because of the imagery in this book . This book is well worth the price. I bought it and will continue to buy it again and again until all those I know have a copy. America should emerse itself in the books wisdom about ours soldiers and society. We need to learn to drop the idea that all we are told is the truth and scrutinize our leaders more closely. Thanks Ms Palmer for this great and timely book of truth. Herb, I knew you at Lackland, I hope you have found peace.

One of the best

Shrapnel In the Heart is a book to be read by everyone no matter what generation they were born in. Shrapnel In The Heart is a book that has letters and rememberances left behind at the Vietnam War Memorial. Some of the letters tell the story about the people behind the letter. The stories are sad, but the courage of the men and women is a true inspiration. The people written about in this book were extrememly young (18, 19, 20) and it seems like they died in vain. But through their letters that were left behind it is easy to see that these young men knew their duty and refused to shirk from it. These men and women are true heroes.
