I bought it just looking at the table of contents at ... website, and I got exactly what I was looking for !! A complete book on image processing/interpretation for remote-sensing imageries. There is even a concise introduction on remote-sensing principles. The book is concisely detailed and have clear how-to-do theoretical/mathematical explanations(often lacking in others) on every topic. And the best point, every section/method is referred to key publicatons for anyone interested in in-depth study of a topic !!!

Excellent book with CD tools as well

I checked the book out from my library to read for my thesis, but the book is so good that I want to add it to my own collection. I have used it so much, that I'll need my own copy! The CD that comes with the book is also very good. The programs run very quickly on today's fast PC's. It's a great tool.

Good book - but why use such an obscure language???

I have to commend the author on not reissuing a minorly revised textbook just because this is one of the few in the field and he knows he can reap rewards by putting the used books out of commission. There are sections of this book that are done in other books in a more thorough fashion that any student of this subject must have. To begin with, the subject matter on image processing algorithms in chapters five through seven is better handled in Digital Image Processing (3rd Edition). There is a MATLAB version of that book by the way - Digital Image Processing Using MATLAB(R). Chapter eight's material is better covered in both Remote Sensing Digital Image Analysis: An Introduction and in a general way in Machine Learning (Mcgraw-Hill International Edit) - an oldie but a goodie. As for chapter three - "Hardware and software aspects of digital processing" - do we really need another chapter to update us on why using a computer for this work is necessary and how the different pieces of software and hardware in a computer operate? Half of the chapter is devoted to the MIPS language - understanding it and installing it. I desire to do neither. I use Matlab for calculations and Java or Python for GUIs, and I imagine most professionals in this field do so too. Like Donald Knuth, author of the essential and elegant "Art of Computer Programming" books, this author has allowed a great book to become mired down in an obscure language rarely used outside of academia.

So what is really good about this book to merit four stars? Chapters 1,2, and 4 are well-written chapters on the basics, sensors, and pre-processing of remotely sensed data that is hard to find in other volumes. The author takes the time to explain this subject matter clearly and in detail. Then, there is chapter nine on advanced topics. The chapter is a work of art on topics I have found elsewhere, but poorly explained. These four chapters alone - 1,2,4, and 9 - are worth the price of the book, which is very affordable by graduate/senior undergraduate textbook standards. I highly recommend it. If only the author had used Matlab, this would have been a six star book.

Quite possibly one of the best books ever made.

You know how it's said that sometimes you don't find greatness, it finds you? September 1980 was when it fell into my hands. I was in the sixth grade at the time, and hiding in one of the many u-shaped cases of books in my junior high school's library. In that month, Dunninger's Complete Encyclopedia of Magic snared my eyes away from my usual reading of history volumes and comic book anthologies. It provided an escape for me, a literary astral projection back to a time where discovery, invention and intrigue were sacred values. This book is a staggering read, from the 30's Hollywood prose of the author to the turn-of-the-century illustrations explaining almost every magic trick performed; from coin tricks, fakirs, disappearing acts, sleight of hand, secrets of mediums to large stage magic, there's a new adventure with every page turned. 15 years after I left junior high, I thought I'd never see that book again. I am unbelievably lucky to have this book in my possession today. A small retailer in Cleveland found this for me after a six month search, so don't expect to get it right away. But when you do, you'll look forward to days, months, even years of enjoyment, whether you perform magic or not.

Here's how it works....

You don't have to be or hope to be a Magician to enjoy this book.Dunninger explains these illusions in a clear and enjoyable language style.I don't particularly agree that learning how a trick was done ;ruins it any more than finding who done it in a mystery.I like to see how things work and really enjoyed the book.With magic shows one can still enjoy the performance without knowing the secret.It is not the same as reading a mystery and having the last few pages missing and the mystery not revealed.Whether you enjoy a simple little trick with a couple of matches or a complicated disappearing person production, this book is a fun read.

An Amazing collection of magic w/ turn of the century style

This book has got to be three inches thick full of
magic layed out in turn-of-the-century style. It
almost feels like your browsing through an old
Sears & Roebuck catalog.
Several of the tricks require lots of preparation.
I enjoyed the ones with on hand items.

The coinage of the Anglo-Saxons is traced from the introduction of minting in the early seventh century to the emergence of a united kingdom during the first half of the tenth century, including the aberrant coinages of Northumbria and the Anglo-Viking coinages of the Danelaw.

A bargain price for a great reference

In my book, "Astronomical Symbols on Ancient and Medieval Coins", I devote a number of chapters in the book to the astronomical symbols that were depicted on medieval European coinage as signs of divine right to sovereignty. As part of my research, I read numerous books on medieval European numismatics and history, and I found that Grierson's book, "MEC Volume I," was especially useful.

It is extremely difficult to find so many coins of the first half of the middle ages described in a single volume. There are many, many plates of photographs of coins, and also some plates showing forgeries.

This book was originally published as a hard back with a list price of $125, but was soon sold out and was going for almost $200 on secondary markets. I sold my first copy to a friend, and then found out how expensive it was to buy this book for a second time. Now that it is available as a paperback, the cost is once again more reasonable for obtaining a copy.

I highly recommend this book to all who are interested in European numismatic history.

Practical readable book

For such a complex period with so many cultures, it focus on each with great clarity, and even though I didn't expect so many catalogue pages there are plenty to illustrate the text. Bottom line, a "must have" for every numismatist, even those who are not familiar with the topic. Great work from Grierson and Blackburn.

Recovery from Addiction to Prescription Drugs by Addicts for Addicts

The Pills Anonymous Fellowship has created an exellent basic text book that addresses the disease of addiction to prescription drugs and the 12 Step solution to recover. Each Step has its own chapter with an essay, personal stories from pill addicts, and a series of questions to assist the reader in "working" the steps to recover. (This is really a nice departure from other basic 12 Step program materials which have separate workbooks and study guides). In addition, there are chapters devoted to the 12 Traditions (the guidelines to creating and maintaining PA groups); so important to the development of a fellowship. Anyone caught up in the insanity prescription drug addiction should give themselves a break and read this book.

This Book is Part of a Solution to a National Epidemic

"There is a Solution" provides a solution to the scourge of prescription drug addiction in this country (and others!). This virtual epidemic has been on the front pages of every major publication and the cause of far, far too many deaths. This textbook, "There is a Solution," is Pills Anonymous' equivalent of AA's famed "Big Book" and, like its predecessor, can become the cornerstone for expansion of this vital but still young 12-step program.

This book is wonderfully written in a way that really speaks exclusively to pill addicts. The personal stories pertaining to each step and tradition are a great way to relate. A wonderful guide to working the steps and traditions.

Subversive, disturbing, and brilliant

Dr. Seuss was one of those rare creative geniuses who both entertained us and challenged us to open our minds. "The Cat in the Hat" is an indispensable part of the Seuss canon. A bizarre blending of Seuss's trademark illustrations with an eerily Kafkaesque plot, "Cat" will delight both children and adults.
The plot is simple: The narrator, a small boy, is left home on a rainy day with his sister Sally. But their boring day is interrupted by the Cat in the Hat, a weirdly anthropomorphic, talking feline who proceeds to turn their house into a chaotic playground. The illustrations--think Salvador Dali meets Beatrix Potter--are marvelous.
This book is simple enough for beginning readers, yet full of subtle touches that could keep an army of literary critics and psychologists busy analyzing it for decades. And that is the brilliance of Dr. Seuss. Buy a copy of the book for your favorite child, buy a second for your favorite adult, and keep a third for yourself.

Learning from Experience

Researchers constantly find that reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading and improved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, your child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well. Spending time together watching television fails as a substitute.
To help other parents apply this advice, as a parent of four I consulted an expert, our youngest child, and asked her to share with me her favorite books that were read to her as a young child. The Cat in the Hat Comes Back was one of her picks.
The theme of this story builds from The Cat in the Hat. In that story, two children are home alone when the cat in the hat visits, makes a horrible mess, and manages to clean it all up just as mother returns. Although the family fish warned them about the cat, the children were gullible.
In this story, the children are not gullible, but the cat takes advantage of them anyway. The children are home alone shoveling deep snow while their mother is away in town for the day. The cat in the hat goes into the house before they can stop him, and eats cake in the bath tub while bathing. They told him to get out and pulled the plug. Unfortunately, that left a long pink cat ring. A contrite, but overconfident, cat in the hat says he'll take care of everything. Four, by being persistent in dealing with the cat, everything turns out all right. Children need to learn that persistence can overcome adversity. Five, thinking ahead can save a lot of problems. If the children had given the cat some paper towels in the beginning or knew how to wash out a bath tub themselves, the complications would have been minor. As you read the story together, you can emphasize these lessons to help your child.
When you are both done with the book, you should discuss how problems can be prevented by anticipation. This is a good way to help your child's problem-solving ability mature.

Dr. Seuss's "The Cat in the Hat" is one of the great classics of children's literature. I'm sure that a less daring author would have left well enough alone. But the good Dr. Seuss had the nerve to write a sequel! And, I'm happy to say, "The Cat in the Hat Comes Back" matches the subversive lunacy and imaginative wit of the Cat's first adventure.
The story begins with our narrator, the same little boy from the original "Cat," shoveling snow with his sister Sally. And, as in the first book, the Cat in the Hat arrives to turn their dull day topsy-turvy.
But this is no retread of the first book. The wily Cat has some new tricks to share, and some new friends to introduce to us. Little Cat A, Little Cat B, and the rest--including some brilliant surprises--are wonderful additions to the "Cat" mythos.
As in the original, the book has some unsettling nuances. Why are these kids home alone? Just what is that bizarre pink substance in the bathtub? But leave it to the psychologists and literary critics to debate the possible hidden meanings of the book; kids will enjoy the delightful rhymes and wacky illustrations. Congratulations, Dr. Seuss: you have shown that the sequel to a classic can be just as excellent as the beloved original!
