Walking the Nile, by Levison Wood

Starting in November 2013 in a forest in Rwanda, where a modest spring spouts a trickle of clear, cold water, Levison Wood set forth on foot, aiming to become the first person to walk the entire length of the Nile. He followed the river for nine months, over 4,000 miles, through six nations-Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, the Republic of Sudan, and Egypt-to the Mediterranean coast. Like his predecessors, Wood camped in the wild, foraged for food, and trudged through rainforest, swamp, savannah, and desert, enduring life-threatening conditions at every turn. He traversed sandstorms, flash floods, minefields, and more, becoming a local celebrity in Uganda, where a popular rap song was written about him, and a potential enemy of the state in South Sudan, where he found himself caught in a civil war and detained by the secret police. An inimitable tale of survival, resilience, and sheer willpower, Walking the Nile is an inspiring chronicle of an epic journey down the lifeline of civilization in northern Africa.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of February 2016: In November 2013, Levison Wood set out on an improbable and dangerous undertaking: walking the 4,000 miles of the Nile River from the trickle of its Rwandan headwaters to its Egyptian delta, a trek that would take him through six countries, strife and civil wars, swamps and sandstorms, thousands of years of history, and personal tragedy. Walking the Nile is Wood's account of the expedition, a briskly paced blend of gripping adventure tale and a portrait of modern Africa, full of objective hazards including crocodiles, minefields, and secret police. But why? Even Wood has trouble answering that question, but "ultimately, it came down to one thing. The Nile was there, and I wanted to walk it." George Mallory would be proud. --Jon Foro

Review
"Jackson's pronunciation of African place names is good. His dialogue voices are easy to distinguish and add depth to Wood's descriptions." ---AudioFile

Great Read
By Amazon Customer
I have been in search of another great travel story since I finished The Long Way Round and The Long Way Down by Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman and this is most definitely it. Levison Wood makes Bear Gryll's look like an amateur with his fantastic story of his trek up the Nile - crocodiles, pythons, close encounters with rebel forces, this book has it all

Great read...
By Alison D D
This was a really interesting read, I learned so much about the areas along the Nile, the people, vegetation, animals, previous explorers and political problems still ongoing in a lot of the areas.
Levison Wood, a former British soldier, a writer and explorer decides he wants to be the first to have walked the whole length of the Nile, a journey that would take him 4,250 miles and through many diverse landscapes. When asked why he wanted to do this journey, his ultimate response was “The Nile was there and I wanted to walk it.”
He had Guides that walked with him through different parts of the continent, needing to change as the languages did. Friends and reporters would occasionally walk small part with him. There was Tragedy, fear and amazement to witness throughout this journey. This is a journey well worth reading.

Crocodiles and AIDS and war and greed, Oh My!
By Becky B.
Levison Wood, right at the beginning of his travelogue, echoing the mountaineer George Mallory's raison d'tre for climbing Mt. Everest, states that he wanted to walk the length of the Nile “Because it's there.” He then amends that statement, saying that he wanted to follow in a great tradition, to achieve something unusual and inspire others, but that much of his motivation was selfish - to go on a great adventure, to test himself. (Kindle location 67) Later he further refines those objectives to a more external, less personal, focus: “to see how [the Nile] shaped lives from the ground, day by day and mile by mile.” (Kindle location 137)

He starts his story not at the beginning of his trek, but in the middle as he encounters the front lines of the Sudanese civil war, where he witnesses rocket fire and an angry mob who wants to kill anyone who may be associated with the United Nations (and, as a white Britisher, he could easily be mistaken for one and shot on sight!) The story then moves back in time to the beginning of the trek, in December, 2013, in the Nyungwe Forest in Rwanda, to a tiny spring sprouting a trickle of water from a hole in a rock, claimed by an agent of the National Tourist Board of Rwanda to be the source of the furthest tributary of the Nile. Wood provides a bit of history, linking his forthcoming journey to Alexander the Great and the Roman Emperor Nero, to Stanley and Livingston and Speke, and rooting it in historical and geographic controversy (Lake Victoria is the commonly accepted origin of the White Nile.)

And so, Wood sets off, determined to walk every step of the entire 4,250 mile length of the Nile (measured from the Rwandan spring.) We learn quite a bit about the guides and friends who accompany him through different stages of the trek, and the history and details of the living conditions of the villagers and inn-keepers whom he encounters. We learn about the physical difficulties he and his compatriots face - searing heat, blisters, thirst - but actually little about his own personal discomfort. In the manner of the notable British explorers who preceded him, he soldiers on.

That doesn't mean that he isn't affected by those travails. After all, the group faces many dangerous circumstances, from single-minded crocodiles and hippos in the deep jungle to heat exhaustion in the Sahara Desert to AIDS in the villages to war. Indeed, death does overtake the party, causing some soul-searching in Woods. He wonders if continuing the pursuit of his goal at the risk of the lives of his compatriots is too selfish.

While the physical difficulties of the trek are discussed, the majority of the focus is on the societal difficulties Wood faces and that the people met along the way endure - the problems at the borders as he passes through Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, Sudan and Egypt, the collapsing economies and infrastructure, famine, war, and the greed of the police and military personnel.

On the 30th of August, 2014, after 271 days of trekking, he reaches the Mediterranean port of Rashid (the place where the Rosetta Stone was discovered), in Egypt. Here the Nile waters complete their long journey and a changed Wood realizes, in contrast to his attitude at the beginning of the venture, that he had only gotten through his journey due to the kindness of strangers, the normal people that he had met day to day - a most unselfish understanding born out from all of the events experienced in his story.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Text in Spanish.

Autobiography of Hemingway's early years in Paris. He tells in detail of his many (notable) friends: where they ate, slept, what they said. Fascinating.

Hemingway's Final Masterpiece
By J. Mullin
Hemingway's writing was always very auto-biographical, but in A Moveable Feast, published after his lifetime and written late in Hem's life, he actually uses real character names in recreating Paris of the 1920's. For any Hemingway fan, or for those interested in first hand accounts of life with Gertrude Stein, Alice Toklas, F. Scott Fitzgerald, James Joyce and others, this is truly a must read.
The book is everything that most late fiction by Hemingway is not. It is lean, romantic, and genuine, without the blustery heroes and stilted dialogue of missed efforts like the dreadful Across the River and Into the Trees.
Here Hemingway looks back fondly on his days with Hadley in Paris, slipping into cafes to sit all day and attempt to write over a cup of coffee. He remembers trips to the racetrack, a hysterical road trip adventure with Fitzgerald to retrieve a car, and other memorable details from the lives of the Lost Generation living abroad. He also takes shots at some so-called friends who turned on him, not passing up on an opportunity to get in the last word. There is some doubt as to whether Hemingway ever wanted this book published, but I am very glad that they did. It is a book to cherish and come back to every couple of years, and it had aged better than anything else Hemingway had written.

Atrocious typography just kills a great book
By Jean-Claude Terrier
This review is not about the work by Hemingway. This is great book.

The same cannot be said about what I will call the typography. Or rather
the lack of it. The text is essentially a raw scan of a paper edition with
many, much too many, mistyped words and many more false new
paragraphs created, most of them in mid-sentence.

In short we have here an atrocious text rendering making for a labored reading.

Please correct this Kindle book and reissue it to all buyers.

Hemingway Memoir Still Charms Us
By George Cummins
This is Hemingway's last book, posthumously published, a memoir from the 20s in Paris, a work he promised himself many years before his death. The early period of his writing career in Paris is described, when he was living with his first wife Hadley and spending time with Gertrude Stein and especially Scott Fitzgerald. The young family had almost no money, but somehow eked out enough for him to prosper, struggling in Paris cafes, learning to write stories and his first novel, and even enjoying a skiing vacation in Austria (the couple was very athletic). Needless to say no one can live like they did in Paris these days! But the magic is still there in the City of Light (plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose). A good read with many charming moments. Paris is a moveable feast; once you have loved her, you carry her with you forever.

A must for knifemakers
By D. M. Lester
Consider this the Cliff Notes of steel metalurgy. It is an invaluable resource for those of us who make knives and other cutting tools. Forging and grinding a great looking knife with good geometry isn't even half of the story; manipulating the crystalin structure of the steel with heat is at least 75% of it. Steel sellection counts somewhat less. This book gives a good "in depth overview" of what steel and other ferrous alloys are, what their properties are, and how those properties can be used and manipulated. It gives an understanding of what is happening to the steel, not just a cookbook intruction of starting at point A and proceeding to the finished product. It gives knowledge of what to do when the cookbook fails and how to modify the instructions to make things come out better. It allows technique to evolve into art.

Dr. Verhoeven has written a book a novice can easily understand. I've taken courses in college which covered materials and processes, yet I was not able to understand what Dr. V easily explains in Chapter 2 that anyone will understand and never forget. There are 17 chapters and 2 appendices which I believe should be mandatory for anyone wanting to understand steel.

Many historical and scriptural findings not included in the Canonical Bible, have now come to light. Access to texts such as the Lost Book of Enoch, the Nag Hamadi Gospels, and the Book of Jubilees, among others is now widely available and, when synthesized and correlated with existing documents like the Bible and Qu'ran, merits rethinking Western civilization's origins and intent.

Prepare yourself for a profound belief-challenging journey through ancient Persia, Sumer, Greece, and Atlantis; from Rome to the United States, HQ of the New Atlantis. This book is not like any other in the field: expect the winged-warrior aerial perspective of an Army Attack helicopter pilot, the BS filter of an Electrical Engineer, a Western Medicine-challenging Structural Integrator, and Southern California didgeridoo player all at the same time. Energy and matter, sound entrainment, slave control design methods using the electromagnetic spectrum, eternal life, gravity, and DMT are addressed herein.

U.S. public school history ignores the Sumerians, although they are credited with all aspects of modern civilization, influencing both Egypt and Greece alike. Television series produced by the History Channel, like the "Ancient Aliens" Series is assisting the masses in waking up to the fact that the Anunnaki were not a myth, having left physical documents and artifacts backing up their claims to have created mankind, described in highly sophisticated language, as recorded by Atrahasis.

It was in South Africa, where the idea was spawned to create a primitive worker, namely mankind, to operate the gold mines, provide temple building manpower, and generally serve every whim the Ancient Astronauts from Nibiru conceived of. Many of the Niburians, referenced in the Biblical Genesis as the Elohim, known to the Sumerians as the Anunnaki, were enthroned as Gods in Mesopotamia.

Perhaps it is fitting for Westerners to look into the religious and historical origins for the kings and demigods of Sumer, the first culture to provide evidence of the cuneiform script language, complete with no antecedent. Not only were mundane records, detailed as they were, kept on clay tablets, tens of thousands of which survive to this day, but the history and direct experience accounts of some of the famed inhabitants, like king Gilgamesh of Uruk, introduce us to "Those who from Heaven to Earth Came."

The Anunnaki astronauts hailed from a planet, Nibiru, in our own solar system, whose apogee resides in a 3,600 retrograde elliptical orbit beyond Pluto. According to their records, likely using spectroscopy as scientists do today, they located gold on planet Earth. Due to a failing atmosphere on Nibiru, Anu their king, dispatched his preeminent scientist and first-born son, Enki, on a space mission to Earth to recover enough gold that could be ionized in a layer of their atmosphere, as a solar radiation shield

Anunnaki gold mines in Africa have been found and carbon dated. Mining operations were occurring at the exact time and location that the "Genetic Eve Study" indicates: Womankind's genetic origins are undeniably linked to Enki's gold mining operation. Egyptian Queen Sheba's mines ring a bell? Michael Tellinger followed the Sumerian account to Africa, locating many of the mines, homes and temples used by the primitive workers and gods, our true ancestors.

Additional source material and limited genealogy tables are included in the Bibliography and Appendix for the reader to explore. More exhaustive ones are available by contacting the author. Now consider your place in the unfolding New World Order. Will you choose the Enlilites or Enkiites to affiliate with, or do you have a choice? Enjoy this intellectual read, it is mind-bending, pineal-gland stimulating, and worth it! Available as Hardback and Audio Book t

Very Important Book - About Who We Are
By William S. Cummins
Body of book is less than 200 pages. No fat anywhere. Truly written by an engineer obsessed by data and not worried particularly about offending any readers who may have limited perspectives. While it is true, most of our history has been written by the winners and a lot of it is simply wrong. You simply cannot fix it all in a mere 200 pages. And if you would try, you would offend many as evidenced in various reviews. Consider the several page negative review. What would prompt one to react so? For myself, it was a flag to definitely get the book! The book is great, and I mean really great. It is not complete in itself. A good start is to listen to his 3 hour interview about the book 8-21-2013 on Coast to Coast Radio archives. Stichin's books, Tellinger and Heine's "Adam's Calendar" books all tell much of the story. It is really out there now, but as yet, somewhat obscure.

This book is a good part of the unraveling of our history that is taking place right in front of us at this moment while we all watch. For some, they may choose to go back to sleep. For others, it is of the most important and profound importance. If you have ever wondered "who we are" and "where did we come from", then this book will be of great value. One can imagine that this book will be spawning others that in turn, will bring a whole new understanding of the "who and why" that we are.

Very Interesting!
By Connor from Massachusetts
This book makes a lot of sense, especially within the context of a lot of the books I have been reading recently and current events going on in the world. That is, the theory that an advanced species of life from the 10th planet in our solar system (a planet which our government has repressed for some reason unbeknownst to me) has had a direct impact on the development of humans, as is directly pointed to in the old writings of ancient civilizations referring to deities, is certainly a plausible explanation as to where we come from when you start to look at all the evidence.

The problem with the book comes with the writers skill to inform a reader. This book is very short and dives right in to some very bold assumptions without providing much background or enough citations to back it up. Apparently, the author is a very intelligent electrical engineer and worked on creating artificial intelligence. Later in his career he came across Zachariah sitchin's work and became utterly fascinated but very skeptical. 9 years he spent traveling the world and looking at old records to gather the data he's currently got locked up in his mind and, frustratingly, he is obviously having trouble getting it out to the reader in a comprehensible way. The biggest error is you know the author has so much he wants to say to the reader but he has a hard time going to the readers level and bringing him up to speed. He assumes, probably subconsciously, that the reader knows more than he does and this makes the read difficult at times. There are so many ancient and foreign names dropped in succession that it is impossible to follow who did and said what, and how that proves anything.

Luckily I heard a 2 hour radio show of this guy explaining the theory and I had an easier time following the logic and reasoning. I had to not let myself obsess about knowing every name he was talking about and as I read on it started to make sense. I think this book, or the actual theory in general, could really be on to something but there has to be a lot more work put into the presentation before it can really captivate an audience and reveal the lost truth that our ancient ancestors were trying to tell us about in all of their writings.

Extremely Insightful
By M Maeghan Donovan
If you have any doubts or if you are on the fence concerning the 'ancient astronauts', read this book. Gerald Clark does an excellent job connecting so many dots and he does so with a scientific perspective. He even explains things from a Biblical perspective too, which I think is a vital attribute. He even explains some things in the Bible that caused me to scratch my head many many years ago when I carefully read Genesis 1:26. It doesn't end there though, he explains even more.

I don't usually write reviews for books; this book grabbed my attention so well that I read it in one sitting. I'm a seeker of truth and this book resonates with me due to the scientific approach he has. He provides proof for everything he puts forth. It's really an enlightening read.

In short: It makes so much sense.

House Full of Insects, by Hymn Herself

Go behind the locked doors of a psychiatric hospital with Hymn Herself, the painfully self-aware and occasionally psychotic narrator of "House Full of Insects." The book is based on Hymn's inpatient stints at McLean Hospital, the famed facility that also served as the setting for "Girl, Interrupted."

"House Full of Insects" is a collection of short stories based on true experiences. The stories are not presented chronologically; instead, the reader follows Hymn from room to room, learning about the realities of daily life in a psychiatric hospital as well as the turmoil in Hymn's own head.

At turns wildly funny and heartbreakingly honest, "House Full of Insects" gives a human perspective on the taboo subject of living with mental illness.

"House Full of Insects" is approximately 14,500 words. Published by PrinGen Publishing (www.pringen.com).

raw and brilliant
By Julie Quinn Lenz
I chose to read this book because of an article on Cracked. It was one of the best I had read in a while and it said the author had a book so I bought it. This little book is brilliant. It's emotional and raw and addictive. Hope she keeps writing.

Most accurate portrayal of a psychiatric ward I've ever read!
By Olivia Hiers
As a former patient at a psychiatric hospital, I am always dismayed and astounded by the inaccurate novels and glorified memoirs that make psychiatric hospitals sound much scarier and disturbing than they really are. Even in biographies some psychiatric hospitals are horribly portrayed, as if all that exists are the ones for the criminally insane! I purchased and read this book after reading Hymn Herself's article on cracked.com. She is blunt, but sincere, and though her writing seems sparse, it is beautiful in its simplicity. Five stars for this brave woman!

Very Moving
By Amazon Customer
Less a series of short stories and more a series of essays, House Full of Insects gives great insight into day to day life in a psychiatric ward. Mostly, though, it left me wanting to give the author a big hug and to tell her I believe in her.
