Gloucestermas (Gloucesterman), by Jonathan Bayliss

Gloucestermas is the culmination of Jonathan Bayliss’s masterwork, GLOUCESTERMAN, a tetralogy reviewers have compared to the fiction of Sterne, Melville, Joyce, Broch, and Musil.

Like Gloucesterbook and Gloucestertide, this richly detailed, playful, and expansive novel is centered on the Atlantic Coast’s seaport “Dogtown” on “Cape Gloucester.” Rafe Opsimath and Caleb Karcist are now older, with new practical, social, and intellectual preoccupations in 1980s Dogtown. Woven into the narrative are the Cape Gloucester and Isle of Man of the 1920s, Dogtown legends and municipal affairs, the fate of the schooner Gloucesterman, the play The Tower of Gilgamesh, and a Court of Love. Expanding the network of friends, spouses, and lovers, new central characters are intertwined in the sprawling web of ideas, history, geography, responsibility, experience, conversation, and love that make GLOUCESTERMAN unique in the world of literature.

Gloucestermas may be enjoyed independently or alongside the previous novels in the GLOUCESTERMAN series, headed by Prologos and including Gloucesterbook and Gloucestertide.

Review
James Joyce gave us the living, breathing Dublin through the prism of myth; Jonathan Bayliss's counterfactual Gloucester is no less vital, and his understanding of local and national political life is equally profound. Though set in the recent past and brilliantly weaving together all the narrative threads of the earlier books, Gloucestermas projects the reader equally into the future, charting the progress of our civic and sensual lives and the life of the American novel itself. --Peter Anastas, author of numerous books including Broken Trip and Decline of Fishes

The world so vividly imagined in the earlier fiction of Jonathan Bayliss is brought here to a fully realized, fully rounded close.

Gloucestermas connects many of the disparate ideas developed in the other novels, deepens the story of Caleb Karcist in unexpected ways, and offers some of the most remarkable conversations in all of American fiction.

Jonathan Bayliss's fiction sets a standard for the novel of ideas that recalls the work of Herman Broch or Thomas Pynchon without the paranoia...

These are novels in which everything matters: party politics, Christianity, dogs, being a spouse or parent, business efficiency, love, dance, myth, sex, growing old and dying all pulled together by the special topos that is Gloucester, Massachusetts.

The action unfolds in a world that is at once recognizable but altered: Gloucester is called Dogtown, Boston is Botolph, Democrats and Republicans are Catholicrats and Protesticans. This re-naming bumps the real world off its foundation just a few inches, with the result that we see things from a sharper, more incisive perspective. Lying behind it all is the adumbration of an enormous system encompassing all art, science, and technology - a general theory of culture whose shape the main characters are in their various ways working toward discerning. These are novels that imagine what it might mean to live a genuinely human life, rooted in a particular place. They occupy a special place in literature. --Gary Grieve-Carlson, professor of English and author of Olson's Prose

About the Author
Jonathan Bayliss (1926-2009) studied at Harvard, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and finished his A.B. at the University of California at Berkeley. While writing his four-volume series, the work of a lifetime, Bayliss earned his livelihood in positions involved with sales analysis, accounting controls, and management, beginning in 1950 at a Berkeley bookstore. In the 1960s, as controller at Gortons of Gloucester, the frozen-fish processor, he initiated the development of integrated business systems using the IBM 360 mainframe computer. He also supervised the design and construction of Gortons' modern headquarters in Gloucester. After leaving Gortons in 1972, he devoted the next five years to full-time writing. Later he worked for the City of Gloucester as an aide to the mayor and as city treasurer. In 1985 he resumed full-time writing. Bayliss was putting the finishing touches on his final novel when he died in Gloucester in 2009 at the age of 82.

Gloucestermas, Exasperating But Intriguing
By Richard Amero
Gloucesternas, A Novel That Vexes But Leaves Readers Thinking

Gloucestermas (Fontis Press, Westborough, Mass.,) Jonathan Bayliss culminating novel in his four-part series beginning with Prologos, Gloucesterbook, and Gloucestertide, was published in 2010, one year after Bayliss' death in 2009. Whether the novel was complete at the time of its publication is confusing as it bares the marks of unfinished composition, which either the author or the editor could have remedied. Characters that appear in previous novels appear in this novel or are referred to by name. As this is a late novel, it shows the effects of the author's declining libido. Taken as a whole it is a baffling mixture of autobiography and fiction, and is marked by an abundance of dimly defined characters and by haziness in plot development.

It is considered fashionable in some circles these days to consider random plot juxtapositions and contradictions in characterization to be the latest fad in experimental, sometimes called deconstructionist, fiction. As such the novel's disassembled and fragmented structure is supposed to be a harbinger of the novel as it is to be. If this be so, may the Deities help us for ramblings flow effortlessly from one character to another in what was in former times called "a stream of consciousness" but now might more appropriately be called "a stream of associations" Caleb, the protagonist, calls the perigrinetic musings Immediate Exclusive Consciousness (IEC).

By bringing so many of the characters in other parts of the series together in Dogtown (a pseudonym for Gloucester, Mass.) the plot strains credulity. It might be said that this isn't a realistic novel so the numerous interconnections, which frequently involve the exchange of husbands and wives, must be accepted on its own terms. It would not happen in a real world but in a work of fiction, fiction could be said by some (but not by me) to predominate.

As most of the characters are now quinquagenarians, sexagenarians, septuagenarians, and octogenarians, the Sumerian goddess of love Inana, has either abandoned her votaries or has acquired a new set, leaving the old to flounder in abstractions having to do with politics (Protesticans vs., Catholicrats), with the vagaries of art, and with manifestations of anthropology, geology, mathematics, metaphysics, mythology, and theology.

One of the more distressing parts of the novel is the way all the main characters seem to talk and think in the same language. Perhaps it is lingua franca in Gloucester that all seagulls are called "angels," but, in my youth, my peers had other less complimentary names. Characters are mostly matroons, which means they are outsiders who have come to settle in Dogwood because it radiates an uncontrollable magnetism. In one place, it is stated that natives go as far away from their collapsing town as they can, with Southern California in general and Hume (read the University of California at Berkeley) in particular functioning as a one-way street.

While the ruminations of the main characters, including an omniscient narrator, occupy most of the book, there is a curious kind of in-breeding among leads as their ruminations usually center around the same subject, such as the search for a father for Caleb Karcist on the part of his friends. Caleb, for his part, is mildly amused. Roughly the book breaks down into two orbits, the first concerns Mary Tremont (also known as Moira Trevisa), Caleb's mother. Around the celebration of Dogwood's annual Petrine (read Roman Catholic) celebration, Moira, as she was then known, had sex with three distinguished gentlemen who were respectively a successful acquirer of stocks who happens to be a Jew; a young officer in the U.S. Navy who is a blonde Celtic navy architect; and a soon-to-be ordained Tudor (read Episcopalian) priest who is something of a "holy ghost" with radical ideas about changing ecclesiastical rituals.

Why this question of fatherhood should be of such concern to Tessa Opsimath is a mystery, but, suffice it to say, she likes to solve the scandals of an associate who was born a bastard. For myself I regard Tessa as a tiresome busybody. At any rate she was a disciple of Auto Drang (Otto Rank) a prominent psychoanalyst and is, therefore, adept at probing hidden secrets. Tessa believes in "free will," and, supposedly, so did her mentor Auto Drang. "Free will" is a hidden motif in the novel that surfaces from time to time. Readers are advised to be on the alert for those occasions when it pokes its nose through the canvas.

Aside from Caleb, an introspective and scrawny bachelor with a penchant for geometric symbols, who is engaged in completing a dramatic version of the Sumerian tale of Gilgamesh, the two main characters that take up the bulk of the novel are Fayaway [Morgan] Gabriel and Finn Macdane. Their common topic of conversation in their pillow talk is Caleb. Midway in the novel all three of Caleb's possible fathers die and the story line shifts to Caleb's position as an assistant to the mayor of Dogwood. Caleb has evolved a theory of organization he calls Synectic Method of Diagnostic Correlation (SMDT). By applying this theory to the solution of practical problems he has become an efficiency expert who can expedite work, reduce expenditures, and get rid of surplus employees. Business machines made by OHM (IBM) make it possible for Caleb to demonstrate how his theory can be used to simplify actions. As the novel takes place during the years Roland Raygun (Ronald Reagan) was president, an era in which personal selfishness overcame aspirations for "the common good" Caleb does not grasp the importance of personal computers which were to make OHM punch cards obsolete.. Not surprisingly Caleb's reorganization schemes are not regarded with joy by corporate vice presidents or by legislators whose political futures are tied to special interests.

Gloucestermas is not for everyone. Since I am a transported native of Gloucester, Mass. I am able to locate most of the sites Bayliss describes, though in some cases I think he puts separate scenes into one place. A map of Dogtown would do much to clear up the confusion. I found the artificial names to be unnecessary though Bayliss may have thought his cognomens were cute, significant, or just inside jokes. His description of the inner harbor and the shoreline of Gloucester's downtown as seen from the Crow (Eastern) Point breakwater does not correspond to anything I saw from the same place, though Bayliss, as all-knowing narrator, says he used binoculars. At one point before his accidental death by a kilroy (in this case a refrigeration trailer), Ibi Roy, a mythological dog in earlier books, charges a sign with a picture of a cat on it. I find this to be unbelievable.

Bayliss has a curious way of trying to link Wellingborough Redburn (Herman Melville) to the narrative which I find difficult to accept. Most of this linkage is through the reminiscences or experience of anyone of the interchangeable characters. I prefer to call Liam Yeats by his real name. For most of the novel, William Butler Yeats was used as a prop without reference to his works; however, in a penultimate chapter an attempt is made to show how Yeat's use of geometric symbols was not as abstruse or as profound as those Caleb uses. (Three cheers then for the "Isorectotetrahedron" (IRTH) and the double-headed axe, which date from Sumerian times and, as far as I can see, appear to have the same functions as a scepter and mace.) As poetry, what Yeats did with his tower symbol, nature images, and personal conflicts, and with the attitudes of the oppressed people in Ireland were on a plane higher than the more prosaic Bayliss ever reaches. When he was not trying to be the conveyor of Universal Systems or a sub-optimizer of optimum ideas, I am sure Bayliss, or his fictional alter ego Caleb, was aware of this.) Another writer Bayliss makes much use of without explaining why is George Borrow, an unjustly-neglected 19th century writer of picaresque novels and translator of the English Bible, who along with Bayliss was of the Tudor (Episcopalian) persuasion and had a fondness for real gypsies (a name Bayliss attaches to free-loving female waifs.)

Bayliss abandons his staggering vocabulary, mostly made up of sesquipedalians of his own coinage, and his equally staggering collections of lists as he gets deeper into his novel. Could it be that these stylistic extravagances became as boring to the author as they eventually became to his readers?

As a Gloucester native, I appreciated Bayliss description of the changing tides as they affected the creek on the south side of Little Harbor (Good Harbor) Beach but I am not sure the description would mean much to outsiders, particularly to those who could not picture the scene he describes it in detail. As incoming and outgoing tides changed the contours of the land and the transparency of the water, so the many shifts in the novel changed the outlines of the plot. In this sense, if one is looking for metaphors the creek and its waters could serve as a metaphor for the fluid nature of the novel, perhaps, not as explicit as the madeleine in Proust, but a metaphor nonetheless.

If the epic of Gilgamesh appeals to readers, I would recommend reading it as a whole rather than in the dispersed sections in the novel. Caleb uses the original as a source but adds ideas that came later in the history of civilization. His updated version is acceptable because it deals revealingly with the world in which many of us find ourselves, without all those bothersome gods who require perpetual sacrifice. If there is a parallel between this lesser story and the greater story of Caleb perhaps it can be found in librarian Gloria Cotton's observation that Caleb is Gilgamesh and Ibi Roy, his Viking Shepherd dog, is Engidu, the wild man Gilgamesh subdued and, came to love. After Engidu died Gilgamesh set off on his quest for immortality, only to find that his only immortality would be in the guise of legend.

I think that if the reader has the stamina to get to the end of Gloucestermas, Bayliss' pondurables, no matter how many avatars he uses to illustrate them, trouble most of humanity. (Is life more than "birth, copulation and death"?) I suspect Bayliss solution is a kind of oscillating pessimism, well to the shoreward side of despondency. He has no faith in God, yet God or Gods exist. He is comfortable being a Tudor (Episcopalian) because he likes liturgy, but he concedes liturgy has its roots in primitive rituals, dances and choral recitatives. I think, like bigoted George Borrow, he finds Roman Catholicism to be distasteful because of its "priest-craft" and he excludes traces of it in his novel, going so far as to place his characters in Mother's (Rocky) Neck when the greater number of tourists and Petrine residents in Dogwood are celebrating their quasi-religious festivities on Sacrum Square, the town landing, on the other side of the inner harbor..

Despite occasional touches of brilliance as in the playful analogy of a schooner to a battleship; in the casual exchange of pleasantries between Caleb and Lillian Cloud-Argo, his lady love of yesteryear, at the Starboard Gangway (Studio) without a kiss for Old Times' sake; in the vivid but all too brief description of the wrecking of the poorly-maintained 56-year old schooner Gloucesterman and the drowning of its helmsman Finn Macdane; and in the surprisingly lively dialogue between Caleb and Thalia, his godmother's daughter, in the final chapter. Gloucestermas is a circumlocutious and repetitious book that ends on a note of middle-age florescence. Caleb is 46 and Thalia is 45; not quite the mature fascination of Antony at 53 and Cleopatra at 39, but close enough.

Q & A with Ron White

Q: Can anyone improve their memory?
A: Yes, I have taught these techniques to a 6 year old and watched her memorize the names of the 44 presidents of the USA literally in just 90 minutes. I have also taught a World War II veteran and he was the star of the class. Some people will learn the techniques and become memory champions. Others will just get better at remembering anes

Q: How long does it take to get good at remembering names?
A: It depends but what takes the longest is turning names into pictures and getting pictures in your head for common names. It could take a year to turn 500 names into a picture. But this book does that work for you turning 1600 names into pictures

Q: What is it like to compete in the USA Memory Championship and World Memory Championship?
A: It is a TON of fun. I wish more people would start doing these tournaments. They are such incredible fun and the people you meet who are pushing their memories are just incredible.

Q: When did you realize you had this special ability?
A: I don't have a special ability. Anyone can learn this system. I'm a normal guy who learned a system

Q: What is the most names you have memorized?
A: 128 names in 15 minutes at the USA Memory Championships. As a veteran of the military and war in Afghanistan I also memorized all the fallen heroes from the us military. Itis over 2,300 names and took me about 10 months.

Q: How many names could the average person remember?
A: How about this: Set a goal for yourself to meet and remember 100 new names this year. Sounds like a lot but it is only 2 a week but just imagine how knowing 100 new people would change your relationships. If I can do 128 names in 15 minutes you can do 100 in 12 months. Oh, for the record you can do 128 in 15 minutes too but you don't believe me now. Get the book and then you will believe me.

He should come out with a second edition....
By ThisDude
This is a very short book to be read within the hour. It is the most clear, concise, and effective presentation of how to remember names. It's even in color with higher detail photos than other books of the same subject. This book is the best one so far. But there are problems.

---There are only two exercises which have ten name, and then thirty names. There should have been at least 6 exercises.
---The names listed in the back are shuffled. My guess is that the author alphabetized the first list of american names, then forgot to do the rest. I will rely on the internet for my name image/association.

I recommend this book, it's worth it. And I would pay 18$ for a second edition with another 100 pictures, and the names section in the back of the book alphabetized.

Just go watch his YouTube vid. It's enough
By mimkorn
It's okay, but you can watch his video on YouTube and its basically the same. I only bought it because of the promised 1600 names, but unfortunately many of them are not well thought. I found myself looking for my own alternative pictures to names because the suggested ones were uninspiring and difficult to attach to the face.

It works great for me, and thats saying something
By Amazon Customer
Ron really knows his stuff! I have always struggled with what I thought to be just a bad memory, but after reading this book I am confident that it was never about my mind not working right. I've put these principles into play and finally started to use my memory to its fullest potential. I can already see it starting to work in my relationships.

--Jay E. Maddock, PsycCRITIQUES

"A must read for public health, clinical, and social care students, teachers, and practitioners alike, including case studies to provide a thorough and up-to-date account of the past, present, and future of global public health. Dr Lueddeke effectively highlights the ingenuity gap between today's wicked problems and their potential solutions, with a timely emphasis on the concepts of "planetary health" and "integrative ecological public health"... [A] very informative and groundbreaking read."

-- Dr Behrooz Behbod, MB ChB MSc ScD MFPH, Founder, Oxford Public Health Ltd, Oxford Book Review

"This book delivers a timely and holistic perspective on population health, providing data and support for innovating and integrating clinical medicine, public health, wellness practices, and healthcare education worldwide... Fills a gap in the literature by addressing population health from a global perspective and considering global public health from the viewpoints of the individual and from the biopsychosocial model of health. Score: 93 - 4 Stars!"

--Ruthann Russo, PhD, JD, MPH, LAc, The College of New Jersey, Doody's Reviews

"This is a remarkable, much-needed book that fills a significant gap in the health and social care literature in the early decades of the 21st century - public, global, clinical, ecological. It is powerful, ambitious, comprehensive, and sweeping at the same time that it is visionary, focused, and deep. Its power and passion are about the potential of population health and well-being optimally applied around the globe to help in creating a world that is healthier, safer, more just, and more sustainable."

--Barbara K. Rimer, DrPH, Alumni Distinguished Professor and Dean, UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (From the Foreword)

Drawing on current research and the expertise of world-recognized leaders in public, global, clinical, and social health in both developed and developing nations, this book delivers an evidence-based examination of 21st-century challenges in global population health and well-being.

With special attention given to major initiatives of the United Nations, especially its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2016 - 2030, and the priorities of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank, Dr. Lueddeke articulates an imperative to adopt a "One World, One Health" view that recognizes the interdependence of humans, animals, plants, and the environment.

The book/text promotes innovative and transformative paradigms for global public health practice, curricula, workforce training, and leadership. Addison (Mitchell-Healy #6)
By: Jennifer Foor
5/5 stars

Addison is the youngest daughter of Colt & Savannah Mitchell and has always been the outgoing, somewhat reckless, wild child. She was always hanging out with the wrong crowd, partying too much & too hard. This unfortunately led her down a dark path to drugs and no one in her family could reach her until she hit bottom & wanted their help, which is what we saw during one of the last few books. (Possibly during book 3, Christian…I don’t quite remember.) But Addison has been to rehab, is clean & sober and is working on becoming a drug & alcohol addiction counselor. Not only is she taking courses, but she leads NA meetings and visits people in the hospital who are there to their drug addiction.

Cole Chase shows up at one of the meetings and then disappears until Addison’s next visit to the hospital & sees that Cole is a patient. The last thing Cole wanted to do was move back to Kentucky where his last name is synonymous with white trash loser. He may have spent his last years in a good foster family, but he never felt a part of their family. Plus, everyone seemed to judge him for what his uncle, Tucker Chase, did to Addison’s mom, Savannah. The best thing he ever did was join the military & leave Kentucky. His cop foster brother doesn’t understand the life of an addict and the best ways to help them. He may help, but it always condescending.

Addicts aren’t supposed to start a relationship with another addict, because if one of them falls off the wagon & begins using again, the partner is more likely to begin using again as well. But Chase knows the real reason that he shouldn’t get involved with Addison. She hasn’t made the correlation between his last name and the significance that it carries for her family. Even during their friendship, he doesn’t enlighten Addison to this, because he wants and needs someone who just cares about him and doesn’t judge him based on his last name.

But Jenn Foor brings the angst, because of course Addison & Cole’s relationship will deepen and they will fall in love with each other and of course, secrets will be exposed. And fans of this & the original series know that Colt Mitchell isn’t an easily forgiving man and will go to any & all lengths necessary to protect his family.

We get a glimpse into the next book which is Cassie’s. The Mitchell kids’ books are all finished and so now, it’s on to the Healy kids’ books. If memory serves…I believe Conner & Amy had 4 kids. Although I wouldn’t mind a holidays novel with all of these characters reuniting!

"Everyone in this room is here for a reason. You’re not alone, not anymore. I promise you that it gets easier. It’s a long road to recover, but you can do it. No matter how far gone you think you are, there is always a road to redemption. You have to want it more than anything you’ve ever wanted in your life. You have to be done denying what you are. You have to accept what you’ll never be able to change. It’s about forgiveness. I look out at each one of you tonight and recognize so many. I feel humbled to know we’ve taken this path together. We’re a team, a force to be reckoned with."

There's a rule amongst addicts, don't start a relationship with another addict, also don't start a relationship with your counsellor or sponsor. You can't help who you are attracted to regardless of who they are, where they come from, what they do or who they're related to. Jenn Foor opens our eyes to the insecurities that an addict faces, when two ex addicts fall in love one bearing secrets that could tear them apart. These two deserve happiness after everything they have endured but will their relationship work and be accepted?
Addison is a former addict. Thanks to the care, love and support of the Mitchell/Healy clan she is on the road to recovery and a new path in life. Determined to stay on track and help others, she is now an addiction counsellor in training. Doing what does, she gets fulfilment out of, helping others overcome their addictions. Now with a new lease on life and a future ahead of her Addison longs for the one thing her brother and sister have, love.
Addy was taken aback when she laid eyes on a sexy, sinful and tattooed man new to her meetings. Cole was there one minute gone the next. Leaving Addy feeling a way she never had before. On her rounds at the local hospital meeting with those who had recently been admitted she was shocked to see the face that left her curious. Cole Chase.
Cole didn't have the best upbring with an addict mother, he was soon in the system and being sent to a foster family. Never feeling like he fit in or was good enough he fell in with the wrong crowds. After finishing high school he joined the Army and took off from Kentucky. Now he's back in town and in hospital wanting to get clean after having lost everything. Being discharged from the Army he was headed on a downward spiral.
Being back in the one place he never wanted to be again, back where he is haunted by his demons, he had no choice he wanted to get clean and stay clean.
He turns to the only stability he had, his foster family. Never feeling like he fit in or that he was accepted Joe lets Cole know just how much he can't stand him. Up against Joe, a Police Officer. He never felt like he would amount to anything.
Addy being headstrong could see Cole needed help, after having words with Joe it was made clear he had no one in his corner no one willing to help him. He wasn't a lost cause, she cared and she was the person to be there to do it. Cole is a challenge, one who is giving her a run for her money, it only made the situation clearer that she would be the one to be there for him. Cole had his own challenge, Addison...

"It’s too bad you have so many rules, precious. I’m pretty sure I could leave you breathless.”

With Cole turning on the charm Addy needed to stay focused, yes he's good looking and charming but she was determined not to let him under her skin. The more they are around each other, the more the sexual tension rises. When Addy finally gives into temptation it feels so natural. For Cole being with Addy was a natural high.

"I’m not afraid of you, Cole. I’m more afraid of not being able to stop myself.”

Taking things slow and keeping this new development a secret, Addy knowing it could be seen as unprofessional and her family wouldn't approve and Cole. Cole has some secrets that could prevent them from ever being together. When Addy finds out Cole's secret, the Mitchell family will do whatever they have to to keep him away from Addy.
They say you can't help who you fall in love with and Addy has fallen for someone with the same surname, who brought so much devastation to their family. Will the love they share for one another be enough or will the family keep them apart? Could this all be too much and lead them back on path of destruction.

She has a new addiction...
By Theresa Esterline
Jennifer Foor never disappoints and the awesome Mitchell tradition continues. Addison's story picks up 2 years after getting sober. You will laugh, cry, and wish you were at Cole's mercy!! And now a bit about the story...

Addison has started her life over. She is working on becoming a drug counselor. She has been in all the positions before, so she can connect with others in trouble. Her next patient may threaten everything she has worked for. Cole has partied all his money away and has no choice but to call his foster brother, the state trooper. Cole is promptly dropped off at a meeting and when that is over is taken to rehab. Lucky for him this puts him right in Addison's sights. But can two addicts survive or will they just bring each other down?

Favorite passages:
- There was no way I’d get involved with someone like him. I couldn’t let myself, even if he was uber sexy, with a good sense of humor. I wouldn’t let his handsome smile, and strong muscles deter me from reaching my goal. He wasn’t going to get under my skin, and that was final.
- “I’m not good at many things, Addison, but I can be irresistible if I want to.”
- “It doesn’t matter where you came from, it’s where you’re headed.”
- I’m your sponsor. It’s my job to be nice to you.
- “I’m just a guy who loves a girl. I know she loves me back, even when she’s fighting.”
- I still thought back to that night in the car when I almost ruined everything I’d been working for.

Imagination-inspiring fun from 1901
By Chip Hunter
The First Men in the Moon tells an unlikely tale of two intrepid (but unsuited) adventurers that travel to the moon in an anti-gravity ship. What they find in the moon is a complex civilization of “Selenites” with whom their interactions are less than friendly. The story is told from the perspective of Mr. Bedford, an inscrutable narrator that can hardly be believed. The reader gets a distinct impression that Bedford’s accounting of what happened on the moon may be massaged. His apparent bravery and Cavor’s apparent weakness don’t always jive with what seems likely in many scenarios. Hidden between the lines are suggestions that Bedford may have been to blame for much of the trouble the duo find themselves in. For HG Wells to accomplish these layers of complexity in his characters with such a deft touch speaks not only to his ability as a writer, but also to his understanding of humanity. Bedford and Cavor (as well as most of Wells’ characters) make for excellent companions with which to explore early science fiction. Wells doesn’t shy away from a bit of heavy-handed philosophy in his books, and this one is no exception. The Selenite society provides an opportunity for some rather critical examinations of Wells’ own Victorian England. Mostly though, this is a book to read for imagination-inspiring fun. Highly recommended.

Good dramatization and interesting politics
By Anton Karidian
Since most of the reviews here concern the BOOK of First Men in the Moon, I thought I would add a comment about the Alien Voices audio production of this story. This is a very well-crafted presentation of the Wells novel, well-acted and lively, and with a good script. The voices of the Selenites (Moon inhabitants) are very eerie and alien, the sound effects are realistic, and the music enhances the story too. I should note that I have not read the novel, so I can't really compare it to this audio adaptation, but this audio dramatization is a good one at any rate. It's much more detailed than the movie from the 1960s, especially concerning the political structure of the Selenite civilization. Since some other reviewers have gone into considerable detail about the story, I won't repeat that in mine, except to note that the political discussion in it is particularly interesting, and this is also a fun adventure story so it can be enjoyed in that way as well. I highly recommend this Alien Voices production.

Sci-Fi Classic
By Arizona Bookworm
The First Men in the Moon It's great to see that one of H.G.'s enduring classics is now handily produced for your Kindle or iPhone. It is a "must read" for all fans of classic sci-fi. It's a quick read so it makes a good travel book. If you haven't read it before, it will seem outdated (or even a little cheesy in some places) by today's standards. However, it is an excellent starter story for younger readers, whereas "War of the Worlds" might be a little scary. A great addition to my "free" collection.

SOFT AT HEART

Lauren Hart had been raised among outlaws, taught to gamble to make her way in the world, but she wanted nothing more than to lead a decent life, to meet other girls her age, to own a pretty dress. One glance told her Flint Mahone was trouble, a ladies' man who knew all the right moves and none of the right emotions. Love was as foreign to him as marriage, but Lauren couldn't resist his plea for help. And when she saw the gentle way he held his little niece, she knew there was hope yet of reaching the warm, caring man beneath the wild, carousing cowboy.
