A good systematic approach to EKG interpretation for the medical student. This book is a little weak on arrythmia interpretation, but it is exceptional at explaining axis deviation calculations, hypertrophy, and ischemic changes. Contains many practice EKGs with explanations.

Horney Still Tied To Freud

Unfortunately, this is the worst Horney's book, for several reasons. First, This is a compendium of articles and speeches, not a book that has unity, a beginning and end. It was not edited by the author and therefore, it lacks the good flow of thought that her other books have.
Second, these writings are from an earlier phase, when clearly Horney was still very attached and afraid (?) to challenge Freud. I am not going to beat a dead horse here, since there are so many critics of Freud around, but some of his theories sound just like wild guessings to the point of being ridiculous. It feels like Freud has never seen a real child in his life. Horney accepts Freud's psychosexual ideas and swallows them hook and sink: there is no doubt that Horney at that time (1928, 1930) was totally Freudian. Her criticism is just a hint, in two or three very small topics, like penis envy in girls. And even in these topics, she doesn't really challenge her guru and idol Freud.
The later Horney with her brilliant neurosis theory is totally absent from this book. I wonder what her ideas would be had she written a book on the same topic just before her death.

A POSTHUMOUS COLLECTION OF ESSAYS (NOT NECESSARILY REPRESENTATIVE OF HER FINISHED VIEWS)

Karen Horney (1885-1952) was a German psychoanalyst and psychiatrist, who is sometimes classified as "Neo-Freudian," although she questioned/challenged many of Freud's theories (particularly about psychosexual development).

These essays (mostly from her earlier period; many of her ideas matured from the position expressed in some of these essays) were collected and published in 1967 after Horney's death, so they lack the cohesiveness of her books (e.g., Neurosis and Human Growth: The Struggle Towards Self-Realization, Self-Analysis, Our Inner Conflicts: A Constructive Theory of Neurosis). There is a helpful introductory essay by editor Harold Kelman.

Here are some representative quotations from the book:

"Or, to look at it from the point of view of succession in time, that it is wounded womanhood which gives rise to the castration complex, and that it is this complex which injures (not PRIMARILY, however) feminine development."
"Like all sciences and all valuations, the psychology of women has hitherto been considered only from the point of view of men. It is inevitable that the man's position of advantage should cause objective validity to be attributed to his subjective, affective relations to the woman, and according to Delius the psychology of women hitherto actually represents a deposit of the desires and disappointments of men."

"Male homosexuality has for its basis, in common indeed with all the other perversions, the desire to escape from the female genital, or to deny its very existence."

Super tool for effective leadership

This book goes far beyond just providing phrases for managers and supervisors for handling the delicate tasks of telling employees that they smell, or that they are not performing up to par. This book gives ground rules for communications, and helps make both supervisors and employees feel safe in having open, honest communications about everything from job expectations for new employees to helping managers guide employees in their careers so they can reach both company and personal goals. One of the most important sections of this book addresses the different management and communication styles the different generations (usually) prefer, which minimizes friction and enhances understanding on both parts. The "new dynamics" of communications are explained and illustrated, so managers and supervisors can move beyond the tired old cliches of the past and into genuine engagement and enthusiastic participation of both employees and managers in identifying, revising, updating and reaching company goals to keep the company competitive and successful.

Melodramatic nonsense

This book is just plain silly. The whole thing, including the sex scenes, is overblown and melodramatic. I've read the entire Nauti series prior to this one, and this is by far the worst of the bunch. I enjoyed the others.

The narration is awful. The voices and accents of the various characters change willy nilly, and sometime the men sound like squeaky women. It's also possible that my lack of enjoyment of the sexy bits was due to the narrator's "passionate" over-the-top delivery. It was hard to take.

I'd have given the book one star, but I gave it an extra point for being free.

There are lots of things that happen in the story, and that might sustain the interest level for some readers, but the fact that absolutely nothing was resolved, and the story just abruptly ends, is a huge turn-off.

Go ahead and read it if you're interested in what happens to Piper and Jed, but don't expect much.

This genre is a bit of a stretch for me, but I wanted to try something a little out of my comfort zone. Even though it is labelled as "Erotic Romance/Erotica," it feels very much like a Romantic Suspense novel only with more graphic sex.

Leigh wastes no time in getting right into the naughty bits! Piper Mackay is a 24 year-old woman who lives with her two sisters at Mackay's Bed & Breakfast Inn owned by her mother in Somerset, Kentucky. She has had a crush for the past year on the man who has been staying in the room next to hers, Jedidiah "Jed" Booker. He says that he is in the construction trade and is working on some projects in town, but Piper has her suspicions that there is more to him than meets the eye. She lets herself into Jed's room, presumably to clean it, just as Jed exits from the shower in just a towel. In the next moment, the two are in a hot clinch and Piper is pressed up against the wall with her legs wrapped around his waist. They get interrupted, and Piper is thankful because she worries that Jed is as controlling as her half-brother, Dawg. Jed scrawls his telephone number in her journal and tells her to call him when she's ready to give him a chance.

Piper is a small-scale fashion designer and dreams of hitting the big time. Dawg and her male cousins are very overprotective of Piper and her sisters, and none of them can go anywhere unaccompanied by a chaperone. When Piper receives a letter from a fashion mogul in New York expressing an interest in her designs, she sneaks away without telling anyone that she is leaving the state. She ends up getting roughed up in her hotel room just as she is checking out of the hotel, and her purse with her identification is stolen. The hospital staff find Jed's phone number in Piper's journal and call him to ask for permission to treat Piper who is unconscious. The knight in shining armour rides out to Piper's rescue.

There is no question that Leigh can write hot and sexy scenes. I was okay with that, even though this book is a lot more explicit than what I am used to. What I am not okay with is reading about a woman getting knocked around. Poor Piper gets assaulted by men on two separate occasions, and the second time she wound up in the hospital with a concussion. I do not know enough about Leigh's work to know whether this is a common element in her books, but I didn't like it.

I love Alpha males who are protective, but I don't care for overbearing and domineering. Jed does not have these negative qualities, but Dawg and Piper's cousins are control freaks. At the end of the book when Piper is just about to find out the truth about what is going on, she decides she does not need to know and walks away and leaves the matter in the hands of Dawg and her cousins to deal with. What?!? Piper is way too subservient for my liking.

This novella is part of the Nautier and Wilder anthology by Leigh and Jaci Burton, which is also a part of Leigh's popular Nauti series. Even though I haven't read any other books in the Nauti series, I didn't have any difficulty in following along.

There were definite parts of the story that I didn't like, but I think the racy parts made up for it! Overall, I enjoyed it but I do not think that I will read any other books in the Nauti series. It sounds like Leigh's Breeds series, which are Paranormal Romances, would be more enjoyable for me, and I will be trying it out.

Manxie Hardy is a new-to-me narrator, and she was okay but some of her male vocalizations grated on me. Dawg sounded like a redneck brute with more brawn than brains.

This book is huge. It has so much information I haven't finished reading it; however, I feel that much of the information is not very deep. The book feels like it is a shallow insight into the world and routines of many different bodybuilders.
