Cardullo (theater and drama, Univ. of Michigan) and Knopf (theater, Connecticut Coll.) have compiled an important anthology of the now-classic drama widely known as avant-garde. The many styles and movements represented here were mined, in the words of Cardullo, to "bring genuine dramatic Expressionism into central focus." Inexplicably, the writings of major avant-garde figures are long out of print or remain untranslated. In addition to the complete text of plays by Antonin Artaud, Gertrude Stein, August Strindberg, and Alfred Jarry, the editors have included such lesser-known but equally influential writers as Roger Virac, Filippo Marinetti, and Aleksandr Vvedensky. While making a case for new inclusions, Cardullo accepts the standard, and most useful, designations for what constitutes a Dada piece vs. an Absurd or Futurist one and uses the terms avant-garde and modernist synonymously. However, a more thorough exploration of the "classic" avant-garde's impact on today's theater would have been a welcome addition to the introductory essay. Indeed, Cardullo makes no effort to mask his disdain for most "performance art," complaining that "the avant-garde can today do little more than impotently express disenchantment with its own ideals." Still, the comprehensive and varied nature of these works and the accompanying illuminating essays will make this a standard text for any serious study of 20th-century drama. Editors Cardullo and Knopf pack this volume with avant-garde writings and plays, from Belgian Nobel laureate Maurice Maeterlinck's 1891 play Interior and 1904 essay "The Modern Drama" to Arthur Adamov's 1949 absurdist play The Invasion and an excerpt from Martin Esslin's groundbreaking 1961 book, The Theater of the Absurd. Between those selections appear August Strindberg's Ghost Sonata, Alfred Jarry's King Ubu, Wassily Kandinsky's The Yellow Sound, Tristan Tzara's The Gass Heart, and many more. Every major experimental movement--symbolism, Italian futurism, German expressionism, dada, surrealism, and theater of the absurd--is represented, and so are some minor ones, such as Jarry's crackpot Pataphysical Theater, which managed to shake things up, if not to endure. Some of the contents, like the Strindberg and Jarry plays, are otherwise widely available, but there is enough hard-to-find stuff here, such as the futurists' daringly short plays and Polish innovator Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz's The Cuttlefish, to make the book worthwhile to any theater collection. Maybe the best anthology on the Avant Garde ever!

A very good anthology written and edited by people who really know their stuff; and with a very good selection from all of the fantasticos from early in the 20th century, including Jarry, Breton and some really crazy Polish guys! It's a long book, 500 pages, but well worth the time, so TAKE your time.

No annotations on each page

My problem with the Kindle Bantam Classic edition of Othello is that there are no footnotes at the bottom of each page. This means no immediate vocab definitions or comprehension aids. I bought the Kindle edition because my old Signet paperback Othello is yellow with age, plus tiny font. (I'm rereading Othello before watching the live performance starring Blair Underwood and Richard Thomas.) Not being a scholar of Elizabethan English, I do need annotative help with the vocab and idioms. So unfortunately, it's back to the old, barely readable but annotated Signet print version for me.

Great play, great electronic version

Othello was one of the first plays I was exposed to when I was younger. It has murder, suicide, intrigue and things that would get a teenager into Shakespeare.

I've had mixed success with some of the free Kindle versions of Shakespeare. Some have been good, some have been awful. This is an exceptional version. It's formatted nicely and is easy to read. The only "lack" is that it is without line numbers, so if you were to use this for academic reasons, you might have an issue or two.

Thus far, Othello's my favorite free Shakespeare play. I missed how much of a jerk Iago was, and all the deception that lead to Othello killing Desdemona.

Love It!!!

After having graduated from college 19 years ago, I was a little intimidated about reading Shakespeare again. However, the Folger Library makes reading Shakespeare much easier to follow (& more fun)! The words that appear as "foreign" to the modern English reader are briefly explained on the left side of each page -- which makes the text easier to follow. I only wish they had these words in bold, because I ended up highlighting the words that are referenced. Because of this, however, I don't have to read a synopsis of each act or scene before delving into the actual text!

Othello is such an interesting play that I find it hard to put it down! I definitely plan on reading more Shakespeare's plays from the Folger Library!!!

There are five CDs by Joe Canzano, under various stage names, available and now they have been joined by ‘Magno Girl’ a work of fiction. All are idiosyncratic, humorous and anti-establishment while also having what Ry Cooder calls a ‘commercial thrust’ which brings focus and accessibility.

Perhaps the book is best described as a prose cartoon. A sizeable cast of superheroes, super-villains and mere mortals play out their roles in carefully timed comical confrontations in front of mass crowds and an avaricious media. References to stylized versions of martial arts and witchcraft are frequent.

At a certain point, about halfway through. the story finds its focus and its central theme, a plot to drug the population with ‘fooki’, a herb which causes whoever eats it to crave retail goods, emerges. The Super Girl Next Door

This book more than lives up to to its tagline: "A Wild World Of Humor, Action, And Romance." Magno Girl is a memorable heroine--the super girl next door who can fly and be remarkably down-to-earth (and extremely likable) at the same time. I hope this book becomes a series. I'd like to read another of Magno Girl's super-fun, super-imaginitive adventures with her bad-boy, big-hearted ninja boyfriend, Ron.

Magnolia is a little known super hero flying above the streets of New York fighting petty crimes when she hears that someone just killed Joey the Round Man down at The People’s Pizzeria. She has suspicions that this is part of a larger plot and asks her friend Ron to help out by infiltrating the home of Thaddeus Stone the founder and CEO of Americamart. Ron and Magnolia attempt to unravel a mysterious evil plot while encountering dangerous villains along the way. Magno Girl’s fame increases with every bad guy she takes down and every evil plot she foils. Now she must avoid the paparazzi, endorsements, and movie deals all while dangerous super villains plot to destroy her. Will Magnolia and Ron save the day? Even when the good guys are working for the bad guys, and the bad guys control the materialistic masses.

First thing, if you’re going to take this book seriously, you’re not going to enjoy it. But if you’re in the mood for a lighthearted and whimsical super hero story then this this will be a fun read. The writing is quick and the wit is sharp. The action scenes are cheesy, but it works because it’s supposed to be cheesy. The dialogue is quirky and silly in a way that makes it endearing:

"He’s been burned and covered with pizza dough. They turned him into a man-sized Stromboli!” My jaw dropped. “Those dirty bastards.” Most of my family was in the pizza business, and while Joey was not a relative, I hated to see a good tomato soldier go down."

The writing was good, the jokes were decent, and the story line was entertaining, but what I really couldn’t get through was the interspersed moments of bickering between Magnolia and her mother. It really dragged the story for me. It was good enough the first time to show the relationship between her and her mother, but then it’s replayed over and over again through the story to the point where I literally felt Magnolias frustration. This is really the only disappointing element of the book. The world and back story are well built. The world, or at least New York, is filled with super heroes that fight crime, sometimes alongside the police, and star in commercials and sell their merchandise. There are low level heroes and famous super heroes. Magnolia doesn’t care for fame, but Ron does and they’re constantly fighting the urge to make easy money and stay true to their core belief of doing good for the greater good, not to cash out like many of the archetype super heroes. The story and it’s characters were absurd, but that’s where this book shines. This is a genuinely fun book to read. Don’t take the book seriously, go in ready to laugh and you’ll have a good time. I guarantee it.

This book delivers with gusto a radical and critical new look at patents and patent policy and is nothing if not challenging, both for practitioners involved in patent law and for the general reader, not to mention all the inventors out there seeking to patent their inventions.

But how inventive does an inventor's invention have to be to be eligible for a patent? This is only one of the questions posed by author Hazel V. Moir, a well known patent expert who takes vociferous exception to the granting of patents to products and business processes that may not be all that inventive

The motivation behind procuring some, or indeed a lot of patents seems to be monopolistic; the desire to restrict others and other businesses from pouncing on and exploiting an innovative idea - which may not be all that innovative - and profiting from it.

`Patents are a fascinating example of how well-meaning economic policy can go wrong,' insists the author and when one reads the overwhelming weight of evidence she puts forward to support this view, one is inclined to agree. Patent policy is economic policy', she adds, basically asking whether the costs of preventing innovation in rival firms and raising prices will ultimately be justified by the resulting benefits, depending on what those benefits are of course.

The process of analysing all this and related questions is indeed a challenge which the author certainly tackles head on, demolishing any number of pre-conceived notions about patents, patent law and inventiveness along the way.

The result is a particularly intriguing read for anyone involved professionally in patent law and its economic implications and consequences. Some practitioners may not agree entirely with some of the conclusions presented, although the author seems to have made sure that they are evidence-based throughout.

Apart from being a practical introduction to the policies underpinning the granting of patents, the book reveals a number of insights into the patent application process itself. Of particular interest is the comparison of how the rules about inventiveness operate in the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) and the EPO -- European Patent Office -- as well as the Australian Patent Office (as the author hails from the Australian National University).

`The book', says one commentator `deserves to become a classic'. Born in London in 1939, Alan Ayckbourn is the author of Communicating Doors (1995), Comic Potential (2000), and more than sixty other plays, which have been translated into some thirty different languages.

Bright, clever, melancholic

Fine and clever, sometines bright, as Ayckbourn's; covering a wide range of interests. So "Haunting Julia" deals with a reasonable but disturbing way of life after death, "Private fears..." with the ability of men and women for iblocking their own path to happiness, "Sugar daddies" with the mystery of our decisions, possibly foolish, "Drowning on dry land", the most funny, plays a melancholic note on the general frustration of private life, devoured by the media and the strange ways of ours destinies.
