About the Author

Dr. Darren R. Hayes is a leading expert in the field of digital forensics and computer security. He is the director of cybersecurity and an assistant professor at Pace University, and he has been named one of the Top 10 Computer Forensics Professors by Forensics Colleges.

Hayes has served on the board of the High Technology Crime Investigation Association (HTCIA), Northeast Chapter, and is the former president of that chapter. He also established a student chapter of the HTCIA at Pace University.

During his time at Pace University, Hayes developed a computer forensics track for the school’s bachelor of science in information technology degree. He also created a computer forensics research laboratory, where he devotes most of his time to working with a team of students in computer forensics and, most recently, the burgeoning field of mobile forensics. As part of his research and promotion of this scientific field of study, he has fostered relationships with the NYPD, N.Y. State Police, and other law enforcement agencies. He also organized a successful internship program at the cybercrime division of the New York County D.A. Office and the Westchester County D.A. Office.

Hayes is not only an academic, however—he is also a practitioner. He has been an investigator on both civil and criminal investigations and has been called upon as an expert for a number of law firms. In New York City, Hayes has been working with six to eight public high schools to develop a curriculum in computer forensics. He collaborates on computer forensics projects internationally and has served as an extern examiner for the MSc in Forensic Computing and Cybercrime Investigation degree program at University College Dublin for four years.

Hayes has appeared on Bloomberg Television and Fox 5 News and been quoted by Associated Press, CNN, Compliance Week, E-Commerce Times, The Guardian (UK), Investor’s Business Daily, MarketWatch, Newsweek, Network World, Silicon Valley Business Journal, USA Today, Washington Post, and Wired News. His op-eds have been published by American Banker’s BankThink and The Hill’s Congress Blog. In addition, he has authored a number of peer-reviewed articles in computer forensics, most of which have been published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Hayes has been both an author and reviewer for Pearson Prentice Hall since 2007.

This is surely a very interesting book but it seems I bought it to early. There is lot of digital content needed for the book, the book tells you to register it and download the content by "Click on the 'Access Bonus Content' link". However there is no such link. I have other books registered at PearsonITcertification, and some of them have that link, but not Computer Forensics Investigation. Without being able to download the digital content you are not able to do all the "Let's get Practical!" exercises in the book - making this book useless :(

I will update my critics here if there are any news in this matter.

Technical Book Written Like a Great Mystery Novel
By Bob Monroe
Whenever I look at buying a book I look at the price of the book after I have flipped through a few pages. I want to know if the object I’m interested in is worth the cost associated with it. Money doesn’t grow on trees but books are made of trees so the riddle goes around and around in my head. I need to know if that $65.00 book is going to bring a me return on investment somehow. Will buying that book make me a better professional or will it bring me enough enjoyment to warrant spending that amount of money? In the case of A practical Guide to Computer Forensic Investigations written by Dr. Darren R. Hayes, the answer is at the end of my review.

When I get a technical book I usually read a few pages throughout, bouncing around from chapter to chapter to get a feel for the book and how it was designed before I settle in to read the entire manual. Dr. Hayes didn’t give me that opportunity because the first pages drew me in almost like a mystery novel. I couldn’t put the darn thing down. The only reason I noticed this was because I coughed and saw the time on the clock. I was on page 139 and my highlighter was worn out.

Somehow the author managed to entice me with page after page of incredible information that I failed to adhere to my normal reading ritual of bouncing around. And I didn’t even notice until I was on page 139. In that space of time, I switched out highlighters because my orange one dried up with over usage and I lost four hours of sleep. For example, during the Enron Oil scandal of 2001 the employees there shredded thousands of pages of documents but FBI forensic investigators were able to retrieve the equivalent to 10 times the size of the U.S. Library of Congress from hard drives. That’s a whole lot of data recovery.

Here’s another tidbit: Microsoft’s COFEE program only works properly if the system is captured live and hasn’t been powered down. This book goes into a large segment of live resident memory data recovery, all written in vivid detail by Dr. Hayes. Did you know that Bitlocker only activates when the device is shut down or the Bitlocker USB drive is removed? That’s how the FBI was able to capture all that data from the recent Silk Road operator. The suspect was at a restaurant with his back to the door when federal agents swept in from behind and grabbed him and his laptop before he knew what happened. His computer was fully logged on and his encryption unlocked.

A Practical Guide to Computer Forensic Investigations goes into some of the basics of forensic investigation, as you might expect, but then dives into registry analysis, hard drive composition, file indexing, email event archives and pages after page of incredible information. Dr. Hayes writes long and in-depth about the differences between each version of Windows. He covers how each File Allocation Table (FAT) is different and what the examiner needs to consider based on the OS and update. While this topic alone could easily take up an entire book, Dr. Hayes manages to blanket Linux, and iOS too.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Practical Guide to Computer Forensic Investigations also discusses the differences between media formats and how you need to consider your connections for evidence gathering. Many other forensic books cover this same topic but none do as good of a job as this author does. Wait until you see Dr. Hayes idea of a computer tool kit, besides including a soldering iron and wrenches, I could almost swear I saw a blow torch and a surgical knife. He doesn’t mess around. What kind of doctor is this guy?

Most of the software tools mentioned in the book are your typical commercial deep-lined pocket tools. For those of us without fat wallets, the good doctor adds plenty of free or open source tools that do the same thing as the expensive ones. In fact, many of the free tools work better. Dr. Hayes is very serious when he points out that you need to have you own set of tools and know those tools well. You need to know how your tools work before you have to use them in real cases. This may sound like common sense but you don’t want to be called out by a legal team as a sworn expert witness only to have them make you look like an idiot because you didn’t add the –d switch when you ran your acquisition tool.

Be aware that some of the information is a bit disturbing because the author made sure to include plenty of real life examples of crimes. Child exploitation, murder and physical harm are cases that have the reader reminded that this isn’t a hobby. The guilt or innocence of someone may rest on your shoulders as an investigator. Dr. Hayes brings up the team concept of working alongside other professionals who are building that case with you. It is your responsibility to conduct your portion of the investigation with as much knowledge as you can offer. This book is a huge part of your knowledge base.

Many new devices are part of the evidence collection process. This guide doesn’t linger on just desktop or laptop machines. There is 501 pages of content that ranges from cellular signal interception, SIM card reading, different tablet operating systems, Android forensics, iPhone data analysis, RIM data acquisition, photo researching, Bluetooth data storage locations and everything in-between. These aren’t merely mentioned as part of a paragraph, they are written about with extensive background information.

This guide meets my criteria for a desk top reference book. I don’t have much space on my desk so space is at a premium. I don’t even have room for speakers so I manage (if you want to call it that) my little space based on how often I use a particular object. For books, I only have three books that have made it to a permanent spot on my desk. The other hundreds of books I have are stashed in the book cases above my desk, daring to collapse at any moment. A Practical Guide to Computer Forensic Investigations has earned a coveted spot on my desk. This means I have to get rid of my computer or move another hard drive to the attic. Some people give awards for great books, I give room for great books.

So to answer the question of whether the book is worth the price, my answer is no, it is worth twice that amount.

By Roman4N6
Computer Forensics Investigations covers many different specialty areas including legal, documentation and technical procedures which need to be accurately followed in order to achieve a successful investigation. This book is an excellent source which covers many if not all of these key areas. It should be part of every Computer Forensic student's book collection as well as in Computer Forensic Labs. The non-working link only reflects one "Let's Get Practical" exercise which DOES NOT make the book useless. This seems to be a publisher oversight which I'm sure will get corrected soon. Don't let this stop you from getting this book. Even if that link never work at all, the book is still a must have in my opinion.

Review
'A clear, comprehensive analysis of what theatre in Scotland was, is and may become in the future. It is a timely and important read'. - Ksenija Horvat, Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh '...leav[es] the reader with an almost dizzying panorama of a theatrical tradition that is lively, contentious and important; that pushes boundaries ... and is startlingly contemporary and vibrant. Comprehensive EIA Resource
By A. Duncan
At over hundred bucks, this book is not for everybody. But it is the best all-in-one resource for conducting environmental impact assessments. The book is crammed full with tables and diagrams on everything from examples of project-effects interaction matrices to "A Comparison of Four Habitat Evaluation Methods." Besides introductory and general how-to-do-an-EIA material, chapters cover air, surface water, soil/groundwater, noise, biological envt., cultural envt., socioeconomic envt, visual impacts, and public participation. The writing has a no-nonsense engineering flavor. Not for casual reading, but as a resource/reference for students and professionals this is a high quality but overpriced book.

Useful enough. But... Misleading title, dry and unengaging prose
By Abhinav Agarwal
Useful in its own right, but dry and uninviting prose render it a middling effort.

India was the most technologically advanced, the richest, the oldest, and certainly the most culturally advanced civilization from the beginning of recorded history till about a thousand years ago. It continued to remain the world's richest nation till the eighteenth century. Why India went into a state of decline a thousand years ago, why it continued to decline, and why it should see a renaissance now, starting with 1991, is a conundrum, even an impossibility some would argue. Of course there have been explanations. Those of a more socialist leaning argue against anything worthwhile in Indian civilization to begin with, marking it as a civilization bound to stagnate (as per D.D. Kosambi, eminent historian), and that anything worthwhile in India can be found to have originated only in the last thousand years - the ideological strains in that symphony are loud and clear. On the other hand, those who have made a more honest and detailed study of India and its civilization point out to its immense contributions in almost every sphere of life, including science, culture, language, mathematics, astronomy, urban planning, and more (see Michel Danino's "India's Culture and India's Future" for instance). Sanyal points out that the Indus Valley Civilization (more correctly the Indus Valley Saraswati Civilization, but not pertinent to the discussion in the book) was the largest, earliest, and most advanced example of urban town planning the world has known, with a level of standardization that would take five thousand years to better. Indians were adept at trading, and the world's oldest tidal dock can be found at Lothal (my post). Indians were trading with Sumerians and "India accounted for 33 per cent of the world economy in 1 A.D. However, "(B)etween AD 1000 and 1820, India's share of world GDP fell from 29 per cent to 16 per cent." It would fall to 4% by 1947, and sink to 3% by 1991. So, what caused the decline? That is, surprisingly, a tough nut to crack. A thousand years later we still do not have answers. Conjectures, yes. Ideologically framed theories, yes. But nothing that quite convincingly explains why. So, a book that has the words "India's Rise After a Thousand Years of Decline" should provide enough food for thought, or so I thought.

The author puts forth a conjecture or two, and the main thrust of that conjecture is that Indians turned inwards. They stopped being open to new ideas. Their "spirit of entrepreneurship" was eroded. "There are several independent signs of intellectual fossilization around the eleventh century" as well as "growing technological naivete after the eleventh century." Plausible, and true to an undeniable extent. It is tempting to rush forth to arguments that sound plausible enough to be acceptable and backed by just enough fact to pass initial muster. The most popular myth is that "the Muslim conquest of India was the result of a young and vigorous religion defeating an old pacifist civilization." This, the author points out, "is hardly borne out by the sequence of events." Furthermore, "(A)s Professor Pervez Amirali Hoodhboy puts it: 'One gets the impression that [Muslim] history's clock broke down somewhere during the fourteenth century and that plans for repair are, at best, vague.'" To sum, "by the time Muslim was rule was firmly established in India in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, Islamic civilization itself was past its peak." Therefore, the author argues that Islamic conquest cannot be blamed for India's decline. This story of civilizational decline is not unique to India. The Roman empire crumbled after the fifth century, unable to withstand the onslaught of an increasingly powerful Christian Church whose rise saw the library of Alexandria burned down by "Christian zealots in the late fourth century", the Greek philosopher Hypatia "killed by a Christian mob in Alexandria", and "Plato's academy shut down under the orders of Emperor Justinian in AD 526." Nearer home, China had naval technology "generations ahead of the Europe" in the early 1400s. Yet a cultural attitude saw this knowledge stagnate and innovation stifled. So, India was not alone in this civilizational decline.

The author argues that "it was civilizational decline that led to foreign domination rather than the other way around." And here is where the biggest problem lies with the book. For two primary reasons. Firstly, while the Indian civilization may well have been at its peak and suffering from the not unexpected signs of complacency by the time the last millennium began, there is nothing in the decades or centuries preceding it to point to an imminent decline. There is near unanimity on the tenth and eleventh centuries as the beginnings of India's decline - not a gradual decay into obscurantism that accelerated in the second millennium. The second is the contradiction in the book itself - if civilizational decline was well and truly underway by 1000 CE or thereabouts, it would have been unusual to find any exceptional centers of learning in the subcontinent. However that was not the case. Far from it. You had the university at Takshila, established in the sixth century BC, destroyed by the "White Huns (Epththalites) around 460 AD." This was followed by the total destruction of the world's largest university at Nalanda in 1193 CE by Bakhtiyar Khilji, and finally the complete destruction of Ujjaini - "a major center for mathematics, literature, philosophy and astronomy" - in 1235 by Sultan Iltumish. A civilization in decay and stagnation cannot be expected to either have had the greatest centers of learning in the medieval world, nor would it be expected to stave off the military advances of Islamic invaders for several centuries, that it did, and which the author points to in his book. This resistance, lasting several centuries, against Islamic conquest, is unparalleled in human history, and defies logic to credit a decaying, declining civilization with being capable of mounting. The book's argument is undermined by its own prose.

What is a plausible explanation is that the steady, unremitting, and murderous onslaught of foreign invaders led to Indian civilization retreating into a survival mode, closing itself to innovations, questions, invigoration, closing itself to adaptation in order to survive. In other words, foreign domination led to a rapid shrinking of the space for openness and this defined, rather than caused, the thousand years of decline. To argue otherwise is somewhat of a classic post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy. This story of the thousand-year decline takes up one chapter, less than thirty pages in the book. That is perhaps the single biggest weakness and flaw of this book - a distinct imbalance between the premise of the title and the contents of the book, weakened further by a fairly weak line of argumentation in itself.

The rest of the book takes the reader through the emergence of the Indian middle-class, the roots of which can be seen as early as the eighteenth century. The post Independence period saw the full brutality of the "Nehru-Mahalonobis rate of growth" visit Indians, which left economic growth mired at less than four percent and hundreds of millions in abject poverty. While socialism may have been the fashion of the age when Pandit Nehru ruled India, "but the blind following fashion is no excuse for poor judgment." Milton Friedman, Nobel laureate, had as early as in 1956 had pointed out the fundamental flaw and danger in having an able mathematician like Mahalonobis "apply themselves to economic planning." Mahalonobis was also shown to be a plagiarizer by none other than the maverick of Indian politics, then a young, 19 year old Subramanian Swamy!

Much of the book is basically ground covered several times before by several other books, most notably by Gurcharan Das' "India Unbound". There has been no shortage of books on the topic of India's rise, and each has tried to add something to this narrative, some successfully so, some less so (Edward Luce's "In Spite of the Gods" being a particularly nasty example, while Anand Giridharadas' "India Calling" being a paint-by-numbers exercise in enervating mediocrity). This book's shining moments can be found when discussing India's educational and legal systems, both of which have failed the Indian citizen. What is however lacking throughout the book is both the engaging nature that someone like Mark Tully brings through his anecdotes and first-person accounts, as well as the vice-like grasp over facts that Arun Shourie can hold the reader with. If you want to be educated on the utter banality of horror that the Indian bureaucracy is, you need do no more than read Arun Shourie's "Governance". The morbidly fascinating morass of the Indian judiciary is brought to the fore in "Courts and Their Judgments". So, even though the book is arranged somewhat thematically, the discussion fails to cohere, flitting from one topic to the other, and is marked by a lack of an underlying narrative fabric to bring these together into a story. It remains a set of longish essays put together into a book.

On a slightly mischievous note, I must conclude by observing that the author, a Bengali, cannot help but point the decline of the once glorious city of Calcutta (now Kolkata) as symbolic of the decline of an entire civilization!

The Indian Renaissance-India's Rise after a Thousand Years of Decline by Sanjeev Sanyal

The author is a Rhodes Scholar and is based in Singapore as a Chief Economist of a bank. He is also an Adjunct Fellow of the Institute of Policy Studies at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

I have read a similar topic, “India from Midnight to the Millennium” by Shashi Tharoor,” and “India Unbound" by Gurchan Das. I found Sanjeev's book an easy read and to comprehend.

For nearly 50 years, since India got its independence in 1947, India was weighed down by Nehru's socialist economic theory and practice.

Nehru was captivated by a mathematician, Chandra Mahaalonobis who devised a scientific input and output model "that aimed to speed up a country's development through state intervention". It failed because it did not take into consideration the power of "innovation.

It was only with the opening of India in the 1990s that there was a paradigm shift in both as an economy and as a civilisation: thanks to Narashima Rao and Dr Manmohan Singh who dared to break away from the old traditional malaise. It was short lived because of political bickering, bureaucracy and corruption in all sectors of the government. India has not fully recovered from it.

Still, with all its woes India has made to the membership of industrialised clubs. It is sad that it lost 50 good years.

The book is an easy read.

Forever Young: A Life of Adventure in Air and Space, by John W. Young

He walked on the Moon. He flew six space missions in three different programs—more than any other human. He served with NASA for more than four decades. His peers called him the “astronaut’s astronaut.”
Enthusiasts of space exploration have long waited for John Young to tell the story of his two Gemini flights, his two Apollo missions, the first-ever Space Shuttle flight, and the first Spacelab mission. Forever Young delivers all that and more: Young’s personal journey from engineering graduate to fighter pilot, to test pilot, to astronaut, to high NASA official, to clear-headed predictor of the fate of Planet Earth.
Young, with the assistance of internationally distinguished aerospace historian James Hansen, recounts the great episodes of his amazing flying career in fascinating detail and with wry humor. He portrays astronauts as ordinary human beings and NASA as an institution with the same ups and downs as other major bureaucracies. He frankly discusses the risks of space travel, including what went wrong with the Challenger and Columbia shuttles.
Forever Young is one of the last memoirs produced by an early American astronaut. It is the first memoir written by a chief of the NASA astronaut corps. Young’s experiences and candor make this book indispensable to everyone interested in the U.S. space program.

From Publishers Weekly
Engineer, astronaut, and moonwalker, Young looks back over his participation in the space program, from the days of testing fighter jets in the 1950s to the last space shuttle mission. He chronicles his first experience with leaking O-ring seals as (the flaw that destroyed the space shuttle Challenger) a test pilotsetting the stage for his continued obsession with flight safety and his guilt at not personally checking every aspect of the design for the Challenger. Between these two events lay the heady early days of the astronaut program, Gemini missions, loops around the moon, and finally, landing there as leader of the Apollo 16 mission. Staying with NASA, in 1974Young became chief of the NASA Astronaut office in Houston, involved in every aspect of the shuttles, and flew the first one. Packed with minute technical detail that space enthusiasts will devour, Young's story also reveals personal side of the program. His pain at the loss of his pal, Gus Grissom, in a 1967 equipment test, is still raw, as is the loss of the shuttle crews. There are also tales of pranks, mishaps, and corned beef in space. At 82, Young hasn't lost his enthusiasm for space exploration, one that he communicates on every page. 43 b&w ophotos.

From the Inside Flap

He is one of the very few people to have walked on the Moon—and the only one of those to also pilot the space shuttle. He flew six missions in three different programs—more than any other human. He served with NASA for more than four decades. His peers called him the “astronaut’s astronaut.” Recruited at the same time as Neil Armstrong and other aeronautical pioneers, John Young’s career, accomplishments, and longevity within the space program are simply unmatched.
Enthusiasts of space exploration have long waited for Young to tell the story of his two Gemini flights, his two Apollo missions, the first-ever Space Shuttle flight, and the first Spacelab mission. Forever Young delivers all that and more: Young’s personal journey from engineering graduate to fighter pilot, to test pilot, to astronaut, to high NASA official, to clear-headed predictor of the fate of Planet Earth.
Young provides an antidote to the typical memoir that celebrates astronaut bravado and successes while at the same time contributing to the NASA mystique. With the assistance of internationally distinguished aerospace historian James Hansen, he recounts the great episodes of his amazing flying career in fascinating detail and with wry humor. He portrays astronauts as ordinary human beings and NASA as an institution with the same ups and downs as other major bureaucracies.
Young, a consummate engineer, provides insights into not only his historic lunar walk and storied career as a shuttle pilot, but also into such space events as the Apollo-Soyuz joint mission and the Challenger and Columbia disasters. In recent years, Young has become well-known for his prognostications about the future of our planet, believing it is only a matter of time before a massive asteroid hits Earth, and in this volume he suggests ways to prevent it.
Long after his compatriots retired from space exploration or moved on to other occupations, Young remained in Houston, acting as a senior technical advisor, where he helped plan and design future missions, trying to make space flight safer for those who would follow in his illustrious footsteps.
Forever Young is one of the last memoirs produced by an early American astronaut, yet the first written by a chief of the NASA astronaut corps. Young’s experiences and candor make this book indispensable to everyone interested in the U.S. space program.

John W. Young, retired astronaut and former NASA executive, has received more than eighty major awards for his career in aerospace, including six honorary doctorates. James R. Hansen is professor of history and former director of the Honors College at Auburn University. He has been associated with the NASA History Program for the past thirty-one years and is the author of First Man: The Life of Neil Armstrong and coauthor of Truth, Lies, and O-Rings: Inside the Space Shuttle “Challenger” Disaster.

From the Back Cover

“John Young has been at the center of human spaceflight since the mid-1960s, and his revealing autobiography speaks to internal issues, external possibilities, and the commitment of this individual to the movement of humanity beyond earth.”—Roger D. Launius, senior curator, space history, Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum

“Young covers over forty years of NASA history in this breakthrough memoir, one that will inspire admiration for his achievements but also raise questions about the overall American space-faring enterprise.”—Michael H. Gorn, author of NASA: The Complete Illustrated History

Why Explore?
By Sussex
I will start by apologising for the length of this review, but "FOREVER YOUNG" is more than just another biography/ space book, it is an historical document, the collected thoughts of by far the most experienced human space voyager. As such it represents essential reading for anyone interested in human spaceflight engineering or history. Whether or not one agrees with the author, his views are the product of far greater first hand experience of human space exploration, in both operational and management roles, than that of any other human being that has so far lived.

I have both the hard back and Kindle editions. The quality, quantity, presentation and range of illustrations provided in both leaves a lot to be desired. However, apart from the personal pictures, these are available from other sources. The Kindle edition is good, but the index is basically useless.

The book itself is not for novices. Nor, contrary to what readers may expect from the expansion of the title "a life of adventure in air and space", is it a book of "boys own" adventure stories. A level of knowledge of engineering, piloting, space history and astronomy is assumed. If the reader lacks basic knowledge in any of these areas then portions of this book will be confusing or even incomprehensible. Thankfully the author covers the full span of his career, unlike many other astronaut biographies. However, the result has been that some areas receive a very thin treatment indeed, this book could easily have been twice as long to do them all justice.

This brings me to the book's most serious problem, it is literally riddled with errors, far too numerous to recount in any detail. Whether these are merely the result of appalling proof reading, I cannot say. They range from easily spotted typos, for example the statement in the foreword that Mr. Young commanded Apollo 15 (it was Apollo 16), through the obviously wrong but requiring more investigation. Did VA-216 fly A-1/ AD-4 Skyraiders or A-4 Skyhawks? The answer is both, but the reference in the book should be to the A-4 Skyhawk. Or the probably wrong - but perhaps it's an obscure new term ("delta feed", do you mean "delta V"?), to the perplexing (Gemini X "we were standing on our seats in the cockpit", no they weren't, only Mr Collins was, which the author obviously knows, so why does it appear?). To photographically provable nonsense (LM-4 had no landing gear - er, yes it did). I could go on for hours but you get the idea. "FOREVER YOUNG" may yet form the basis of a space geek "spot the mistake" game. One problem is that if you don't know your stuff you may come away with some very funny ideas, and considering their apparent source, you'd be within your rights to be pretty adamant that they were correct. In the future the book will be viewed as a primary source, and Space history doesn't need this. I really hope that subsequent editions correct the litany of errors. The other effect for me was that it made me wary of much of the rest of the content, if the simple stuff is so riddled with mistakes, how accurate is the rest?

Next, the style, this book reads in many ways more like a collection of notes (or, considering the author's professional style, memos). It is quite annoyingly repetitive, some points are made well out of chronological sequence without specifically saying so. At other times explanations are lacking to the point of being obscure. The author insists on quoting burn times, delta Vs, orbiter touch down sink rates etc at almost every opportunity when these add absolutely nothing to his tale. If he felt that their inclusion was important then by all means include them in an appendix for those who haven't read the mission reports or programme summaries produced by NASA. Meanwhile, in many instances the author neglects discussing the reasons or his thoughts about the events being mentioned. Here's one example, taken from Mr Young's first voyage to the Moon on Apollo 10:

"I controlled the firing of the service propulsion system, which accelerated us to 2,960 feet per second and placed us in a lunar orbit of 59.6 by 169.1 nautical miles above the Moon's surface. We did additional maneuvers to get our orbit to 61.2 by 60 nautical miles."

Well firstly that should be decelerated, and I think a quick explanation of why they didn't aim for an exact circular 60 nautical mile orbit would be in order - (since he considers a precise listing of orbital parameters to be worth while, why not explain, not all readers will know this). Not to mention that a little more description of what it was like to enter lunar orbit for his first time would have hardly gone amiss.

Or from that same voyage, how's this for a description of reaching the fastest speed ever by any humans:

"I was in the commander's seat operating the entry. We were on automatic and came in at a speed of 36,315 feet per second - a little over 24,760 miles per hour - which proved to be the fastest entry of any Apollo spacecraft . . .
Our guidance system commanded full 'lift-up' through peak acceleration, which was 6.8g. When the forces backed off to 5.8g, the spacecraft rolled to 90 degrees . . ."

You might as well just read the mission report or technical crew debriefing. Why the fast return? How did it feel, noisy, rough? What could you see? Did anyone say anything? In fact, in general Mr Young's descriptions of his six space missions are disappointingly bland. Of course, many other astronaut autobiographies suffer from the same problem. As a final word about style, be sure to also read the 'notes' section at the back, much of which should, I feel, have been incorporated in the main text.

Every now and again we are offered a glimpse of Mr Young's famous insights and sense of humour. Talking about Apollo 16:

"The hardest part of all human extravehicular activity on the Moon was getting back into the lunar module".

Or awaiting the first space shuttle launch:

"I was also thinking about what a grand time it would be if Crip and I used those ejection seats just to fly through the 5,000 F plumes of the solid rocket motors!"

I just wish there were more.

As an autobiography the book is useful in filling out the blanks in Mr. Young's non-space flight career, although again he misses the opportunity to really involve the reader. So what's it like when the canopy comes off your F-8 at around 500 knots? I still don't know, but at least I now know that it happened. No opinion on the introduction of the mirror landing sight and angled deck to naval aviation? On the personal side it is pretty tight lipped, although we now know about his mother's unfortunate illness. We get one line on his first marriage "it was a mismatch from the beginning". Whilst wholly in keeping with Mr. Young's character, I feel this limits the book's wider appeal.

In discussing his career after his final space flight the author is more passionate and you get more of an insight into what drives him. The discussion of some of the space shuttle's problems is illuminating, although considering the constant inadequate funding and safety issues I cannot concur with his conclusion that the programme could have gone on until 2030. His discussion of the NEO threat is interesting and I wholeheartedly agree, I hope that he continues to push for action, preferably on an international basis - it is not a problem for Americans alone. In his thinking about how we can all make the next trip forward, Mr Young makes a powerful case for a return to the Moon, with more passion and logic than some of the common "space mining" etc suggestions of past decades. He gives a modern rationale of the need for exploration, far more useful than Mr Mallory's much quoted exasperated retort to a journalist (which is now mistakenly thought of as the reason by many people).

Overall this is by no means the waste of reader's time that, for example the late Mr Cooper's and Mr Shepard's books represent. It is not the essential "personnel file" that Mr Hansen's biograpghy of the late Mr Armstrong provided us with. Nor is it the riveting first person view of space flight provided by Mr Collins and Mr Worden. What it is to me is essential but flawed reading - badly in need of a corrected and revised second edition. Perhaps there is a market for a "FOREVER YOUNG" study guide, correcting errors and explaining the details. (A paperback edition containing many corrections has since been released. Unfortunately it is still far from problem free, however, I recommend that version over the hardback). My star rating for the book is an average of my view of it's importance (5), and its quality as literature (3). Mr Young was born just one month after Mr. Armstrong. In view of the latter's recent demise, I'm just glad that we got this book at all.

Traditionally large numbers of people have managed to get stirred up about various problems, for example nuclear weapons and global warming. However, they've all missed the big picture so I'll leave you with a final thought from the author who, until now has "been everywhere, done everything and said very little":

"Single planet species don't last."

A Disappointment
By B. Morris
I've been greatly looking forward to this book. John Young has had an amazing career in Nasa and having read all the astronaut autobiographies from the era I was looking forward to hearing his views on a great many things. Unfortunately the book is a great disappointment.

My problems with the book are not the errors which have been specifically covered in other reviews. The problem is it's not really an autobiography. The book is more of a technical retrospective on the missions Young was on. Young's life as an astronaut, his training and relationships with his fellow astronauts is secondary at best. For example his first mission was the first Gemini mission with Mercury veteran Gus Grissom. I really wanted to hear from Young about Gus. How they got along and worked together. How and why Young got assigned as the first of his astronaut class to such an important mission. Unfortunately we hear none of that. What we get is a technical diatribe about his mission. This Young does over and over in terms of every one of his missions. They are described coldly with little insight into the men he works with.

It would be one thing if this book was suppose to cover the technical aspects of Gemini or Apollo but it's suppose to be an autobiography. We're reading the book because we want to know about John Young and his experiences from a personal perspective. The technical points of these missions are covered in other books and generally done much better than they are here. As it is Young's descriptions of the missions are impersonal at best. Many times he will use acronyms or abbreviations without explaining what they mean. For example he might make reference to the LPN without telling the reader that LPN stands for lunar portable magnetometer. If you didn't know that already you'd not be sure what he's talking about.

The book finally goes off the deep end in the last chapters where Young goes on a very long technical diatribe about the Space Shuttle. Again it would be fascinating to hear his views on this era but instead mostly we get technical descriptions about how the shuttle works which again is covered better in other books.

In the end I found this to be an extremely disappointing book. Many books by astronauts such as Mike Collins, Gene Cernan and Deke Slayton are fascinating reads that are not only entertaining but important references on the era. Unfortunately Young's is of little value as it adds nothing from a personal perspective nor does it work as a technical book on Gemini, Apollo or the Space Shuttle which 80% of the book tries to be.

A Hero's Biography But Full of Errors
By Alex Kelly
I have nothing but respect for John Young. He has been a hero of mine since childhood. However, this book is so full of errors that it's virtually unreadable. I'm a bit of a space freak, so the errors jumped off the page at me. But I feel bad for anybody who reads it without realizing that virtually every page has a significant technical or historical error. I could forgive this if the book wasn't trying so hard to be precise. For example, an engine burn was described as having a duration of 331 seconds. That sort of precision (as opposed to saying five and a half minutes) implies that the book is technically accurate and factual.

The error that I found most galling (so much so that I stopped reading and wrote this review) was when it was stated that on its fatal mission, Columbia docked with the International Space Station (ISS). This never happened, Columbia's orbit was incompatible with ISS rendezvous. Since Mr. Young's passion was crew safety, I am sure he knew better. This is sloppy transcription and editing, and the result of Mr. Young collaborating with people who lack the necessary technical background. This book was published two years ago, so there is no excuse for the errors being present in the Kindle edition I purchased in 2014.

Signals & Systems, by M Nahvi

Signals and Systems by Nahvi is intended for use in a signals and systems course at the undergraduate junior level. The book covers the analysis of signals and linear systems in the time and frequency domains and is organized into 18 chapters. The chapters are modular with sections and there are no sub-sections. The modular structure of the chapters provides a quick and direct approach to each topic within the chapters and makes the book a convenient tool for instructional needs in a wide range of teaching scenarios and at various levels of complexity. Continuous-time and discrete-time domains are treated separately in two parts. This allows the book to be used for instructions on either domain separately. It may also be used for courses teaching the two domains simultaneously, as the chapters in part one and two provide parallel presentations of each subject.
