About the Author

Philip Durkin is Principal Etymologist of the Oxford English Dictionary. He trained as a medievalist and historian of the English language at the University of Oxford, where he completed a doctorate on previously unedited Middle English prose texts. He is a well-known speaker on English etymology. His publications include articles in scholarly journals, such as Transactions of the Philological Society, Dictionaries, and Critical Quarterly. He is Honorary Treasurer of the Philological Society, the oldest learned society in Great Britain for the study of language and languages

Excellent textbook

An excellent and comprehensive book. This book is for anyone who wants to know what etymology is all about, how it works and what problems it faces. If you ever browsed an etymological dictionary or looked at the brief etymologies in a regular dictionary and wondered, "How did they come up with this?", then you should read this book.

The writing is very accessible and readable. If only most other language scholars wrote like this.

The book really expects no prior knowledge, but it would help if the reader is familiar with the basics of grammar and knows a foreign language.

One of the best points of the book: it discredits the common misconception that etymology is about finding the "true" or "original" meaning of a word. There is no such thing, since language changes all the time, and always did so. For a reader who is not familiar with the history of the English language, it can be quite fascinating to see how dramatically it changed.

A fine orientation into the subject

A clear, rather formal presentation of the science of etymology, which is in many ways like archaeology or landscape history (only of words). The book's strength is its reasonably pain-free presentation of the latest research on the science's theoretical foundations. But any dryness is alleviated through plenty of fascinating (and often delightfully surprising) examples and case studies.

I suppose it may be a little heavyweight when compared to a number of recent books, which are basically just collections of curious word histories (e.g. The Etymologicon). But it shows more of the practical workings of the subject, and does better at helping make the most of the etymological entries in the larger dictionaries. It also fills a need for an accessible introductory guide to methods and practice for someone who wants to actively work in the field. This is especially important, because of all the linguistic sciences this one is the most open to amateur contributions and independent study.

Not a Dictionary

As a wordsmith, etymology has always been an important topic for me and I have often wondered "how do they know that". Durkin explains in rich detail just how he does it and as a general interest book I shall keep it by me. He writes very well, as one would expect, and the book has value on that account for anyone who wishes to express themselves well. Durkin uses many examples to illustrate the various processes and procedures in word research but this is not an etymological dictionary. It's more of a "How To" book.

A Small Dynamo of RPG IV ILE information

This is a 15 chapter, 3 appendixes book that is only 270 pages, yet it gets you into RPG ILE in a short span of time. The author does a great job of specifying the changes from RPG III to RPG IV. I like the way a chapter was devoted to each specification change from Header, File, D-spec, Input , to the Calc spec. There are chapters devoted to Free form expressions using the EVAL opcode and the book does a good job of covering the many variations of the EVAL expressions. The new RPG Built-in Functions are covered, where there is a conscious move to change from RPG III's use of conditioning and result indicators to RPG IV's appropriate Built-in Function, eg., use of %FOUND bif with the CHAIN opcode to return a true value when a record is found, whereas, in the RPG III way the resulting indicator was turned off when the record was successfully found. There is a chapter devoted to Procedures, Subprocedures, and Prototypes, and the author takes you through the process of declaring and defining the procedures in actual coding examples. There is a chapter devoted to the new date/time operations and date bif's. These go a long way to simplifying date handling operations that used to take several lines of code. All in all, a good jump start into RPG IV for the person with knowledge of RPG III.

Great Book No Big Changes

The biggest reason I love this book is because it is the same book as the later edition that I needed for school only difference is the chapter name changed a bit but same stuff. What was added was some examples (lack of a better word here) my instructor didn't use those. I really hate spending tons of money on books and I like keeping the ones solely related to my field like this one

me so much. As I have already started my Wednesday
Night Bible Club, I am slowly adding some things as I
go...although to some the ideas may be old-fashoned,
the positivity (can I use that word?) of the message
is ageless. Ideas are practical and can be made based
on the instructions given. I teach children K-5th
Grade and I can adjust the games for age group.

In 1974 Linda Quiring moved to Salt Spring Island, British Columbia to 'find' herself. Salt Spring Island was one of the centers for the counter-culture movement in Canada; home to hippies and back-to-the-landers. Soon, Linda encountered an enlightened man, Sydney Banks, and became his first student.

Together they wrote Island of Knowledge under Linda's authorship, detailing Syd's teachings and the profound changes those listening experienced in their lives, health and relationships.

Sydney Banks would ultimately become renowned for his revelation of The Three Principles inherent in those teachings. Linda and Syd remained friends until his passing in 2009.

Before his death, Syd approached Linda about the possibility of getting Island of Knowledge republished. However, embarrassed by the 'hippy' jargon of the 1970's, Syd asked that references to the times be changed.

In deciding what should be left in, what changed, and what taken out, Linda and her publisher realized the book was in fact an important historical account of an amazing time and place and that to tamper with the integrity of the book would be a great disservice, thus it is republished exactly as is.

About the Author:

Linda Quiring and her husband Bill live on a small farm on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia where they grow heritage apples and keep bees. Recently retired after 35 years making Artisan soaps and body care products, Linda is now working on her next book.

All of Kim Diehl's books feature her beautiful work combining piecing, appliqu� and colorful fabrics. Each one contains well written instructions illustrated with both photographs and detailed drawings. Patterns for all appliqu� pieces are included. Martingale has published all six of Kim's "Simple" series of books and now her newest book Homestyle Quilts Simple Patterns and Savory Recipes.

Homestyle Quilts Simple Patterns and Savory Recipes was co-written with her friend, editor and writer, Laurie Baker. Kim and Laurie both share a love of quilting and preparing delicious meals--especially meals that can be prepared easily while still allowing them to maintain their busy schedules and sewing projects. The book features a collection of quilts that feature a simple blend of patchwork and appliqu� as well as appetizing recipes that can be prepared in the slow cooker or just thrown together to maximize your sewing time and minimize your cooking time.

With today's modern piecing methods and Kim's easy invisible machine appliqu� technique featuring appliqu� with gentle shapes and a limited amount of pieces you will be able to complete a project over a weekend. About the Author

With just the third quilt she'd ever made, self-taught quiltmaker Kim Diehl became the winner of American Patchwork and Quilting magazine's "Pieces of the Past" quilt challenge in 1998, turning her life down a whole new and unexpected path. Her work has been featured in numerous national and international quilting magazines. In addition to her best-selling "Simple" series of quilting books for Martingale, Kim has designed several fabric collections for Henry Glass & Co., enabling her to be involved in the full circle of quiltmaking from start to finish.

For more than 10 years, Laurie Baker has been a freelance editor and writer for the quilting, sewing, and crafting industries, and she occasionally designs projects for publication. Laurie lives in West Peoria, Illinois, with her husband, Todd; her college-aged children, Nick and Caitlin; two fat and sassy cats; and an enormous arsenal of fabric that she loves adding to. When she's not playing with needles and fabric or contemplating where to stash her latest textile acquisition, she enjoys gardening, reading, cooking, and knitting. She has no plans of entering rehab for her fabric addiction.

Good food as well as good quilt patterns

I have yet to meet a book written by Kim Diehl that I haven't liked. This book is no exception to that. Baskets, Churn Dash and flowers and berries are a few of the themes of these blocks. But that is not all, each pattern has a recipe to go with it and it is made to cook while you sew. What could be better? (I know, someone to cook and clean for you!)

A Baker's Dozen of quilts and recipes will keep you feed and sewing for many weeks to come. The projects start out with a paragraph about the quilted item and is followed by the material and cutting lists. These are clearly written and easy to follow.

A colored photo with the finished quilt and block size and who designed, pieced, appliqued and quilted the item comes next. Plenty of graphics are strewn throughout the written directions. Templates, if needed, are provided at full size.

The recipes are highlighted in a colored box and vary from slow cooker to baking in an oven. They are simple, filling comfort foods and I can't wait to try several of them. The authors have just added one more reason to buy their books --- good food as well as wonderful quilting projects.

I'll pass on the recipes & request more patterns please

Ms Diehl has another winner. The patterns in this book are very simple with more of a formal look since she is using fewer fabric selections in each quilt. Most patterns are bolder with larger sized patterns, some are duplicated from her previous books.

I am kinda disappointed in seeing recipes in her book. I would have liked to see more instructions included on how to extend a wall hanging into a lap quilt or options of what to do in case you are not wanting applique in a quilt. In other words, "to applique or not applique this quilt". The space taken up by recipes could be used for these types of things or just more quilting tips & hints.

All her books are geared toward a "planned scrappy look". She uses strip piecing techniques in all her books & she tells you how much yardage to buy of each color. It would be hard for a beginner to follow along if she/he was trying to use fabrics from the scrap bag. Cut strips of fabric, crosscut those strips into x number of blocks/half triangles & so forth. This is a good thing for me since I do not like things turning out totally scrappy..there is a rhythm & flow in her quilts due to her choice of colors & placement of fabrics. There is much to be learned from her color combinations. In fact, I have taken a lighted magnifying glass (purchased on Amazon) just to get a closer look at the prints & background fabric.

Just because her quilts are displayed in a "country setting" does not mean they will not look fantastic in a contemporary or modern room. If you are really good at color combinations, then you can move away from the country look quite easily. I have no color sense, so I stick with her color suggestions & am always pleased.

Bottom line, easy directions, simple patterns, quick construction if you follow her strip piecing directions. I'll have more patterns & pass on the recipes though, just my opinion.

Wonderful Homey Quilt Book

I have been a big fan of Kim Diehl. I like her style of quilts a lot. I was not familiar with Laurie Baker but these two women blend their styles together perfectly. I loved the quilt patterns and have several picked out to make in the near future. I also loved that Kim and Laurie shared several of their easy recipes in the book. A great book with beautiful pictures and great recipes.
