Something for Everyone

This collection of ten short stories has something for everyone to enjoy. There were a couple of the stories that weren't quite my style, but I respect their writing. The ones that I enjoyed the most had me completely wrapped up in the story as if I was living the moment with the characters, such as A Place to Call Home and On Behalf of Love. The two most touching stories for me are The Worst Christmas Ever and The Ride. However, I got something out of each of the stories.

As with most short stories, at the end of several of these I found myself wanting more and will check out those authors to see what other work they have created. This was an excellent sampling of very talented writers and look forward to reading more of their work and seeing more anthologies like this.

Short stories packed full of human-ness

This book was a nice break from my usual business reading. Even though Show Off Anthology was a quick read as a collection of short stories, I liked the raw human emotions expressed in the book. Each writer sure does pack a lot of story into his or her short story. Some of the stories surprised me in their endings.

Great collection of authors represented here. I'd give one more star if the anthology included a few more short stories in it.

Wow! Gambit of Reality

The ten stories in this anthology run your emotions up and down like fingers on the neck of a guitar. The one constant throughout all of them is the adventure of being there in the moment of that reality. The characters are fleshed out, not through the author's detailed description, but through the actions or no-actions the characters take. I was amazed that the stories were so short, but that you knew the characters as if you had read their biographies. This takes real talent and each of these bites of life had that talent.

All that talent and then Joe Bunting editing, well it just had to be great and I was expecting great, yet was still surprised by the collection. Concise, not a wasted word anywhere, yet full rich stories that linger after the reading.
My favorite was the first one, I guess because I'm from the South and it rang so true to the absurdities of every day life.

If there had been 10 stars for the giving, I would have given it ten. Left wanting more, I think I would enjoy reading all of the stories in the gene pool from which these were drawn. I will be searching out the authors to find any more morsels of their talent.

Finally I say this; if Joe Bunting has anything to do with a story, writing or editing, you can expect to be enthralled, moved, and satisfied, but wanting more.

Because of those design goals, this book is something of a catch-all, covering about a dozen general topics ranging from exception-handling to nested classes (and interfaces!) and the reflection API. The coverage clearly derives from the author's "lessons learned" notes, and they're rich with information. If nothing in this book surprises you, you're probably very experienced with Java.

In addition to this book's tutorial function, Hardcore Java puts forth and defends a number of opinions about the design and style of Java software. One example: After explaining how bit fields work--bit fields aren't widely used in Java programming, and their advantages may be interesting to some programmers--Robert Simmons points out that they're inherently limited in their ability to contain data, and that this can cause problems. About the Author

Robert Simmons, Jr. started programming when floppy disks were reallyfloppy and 64 kilobytes of RAM was considered state of the art. Fromhis early days of programming BASIC and Logo on an Apple IIe, headvanced through Pascal and C to arrive in the object oriented realmof C++. When Java first came out, he knew that the infant languagewould become a serious player amongst corporations; Robert learnedJava and began using it as his primary language for programming in1997. Although Robert is American, he lives and works as a SeniorSoftware Architect in Germany.

Misleading Title

I gave this book 2 stars more for content than for anything else. When I saw 'Hardcore' in the title, I thought the book would have more advanced programming techniques; optimization, advanced use of interfaces, etc.
What I found was a book with information that is mostly either common sense or something that should have been learned in computer science 101. I've been programming in Java for a little over four years and there is nothing new in this book for me.
On the up side, the book read fairly well. If you don't know Java and are fairly new to programming you might find the book helpful. But if you are looking for anything "hardcore", you won't find it here. In my opinion, it should have been named something like "Java, Best Practices" or something similar.

Newer prints of this book are better...

I purchased a copy of this book a couple of months ago and was fortunate to obtain a more recent printing than the earlier reviewers probably had. There were still some errors and typos of various levels of severity, but quite a few fewer than the earlier printings. This, together with the O'Reilly errata page for the book and a small bit of work on my part involving the use of scissors and a glue stick, gave me a book which has become very useful to me at work. Hopefully, even more recent printings will be even better.

These annoyances aside, I am very happy with the book and what I was able to learn from it.

Nice intro to slightly advanced Java...

The title "Hardcore Java" is definitely overkill. A better one may be "Stuff a new Java developer might not know yet".
This book is full is little nuggets of "oh, good idea" and "oh, I never knew that". But don't expect to be a guru after reading it by any means. Lean towards 'Effective Java Programming Language Guide' for a thorough, advanced discussion of the Java language.
For it's price, it's not bad, it seems relatively cheap compared to many books on the subject. It's easily a weekend read as well.

Entries such as "nudnik" (an insignificant person), "New York minute" (in an instant), "La-La Land" (Los Angeles or a fantasy world), and "beam me up, Scotty" (a desire to be elsewhere, an illicit drug mixture, or a catchphrase from the Star Trek series) will delight some readers. Good, But Consider Two Other Slang Dictionaries

In the library, I did a side-by-side comparison of this book (Green: Cassell Dictionary..., 1998) with: (a) Spears, Richard: NTC's Dictionary of American Slang and Colloquial Expressions, 3rd ed., 2000 and (b) Chapman, Robert: Dictionary of American Slang, 3rd ed., 1995. The advantages of this dictionary over the other two are: (1) it has the most pages (1,312) and entries (65,000) of the three, (2) it has British expressions as well as American, and (3) it has some slang that is no longer in common use, and indicates what sort of people originated or might use the word/phrase (e.g., "lowland n. [1930s-60s] (US Black)"). On the other hand, this book has: (1) relatively small print, and (2) virtually no examples of usage in context. Hey, buy all three from Amazon.com!

The most comprehensive work on modern slang

One of the most interesting aspects of any language is the study of idiomatic and colloquial expressions. The use(or understanding)of slang words indicates a person's true command of a language. Here we have one of the greatest collections of modern slang words in the English language (as opposed to the analogous work on historical slang by Partridge - Lighter's superb work 'Historical Dictionary of American Slang' is alas still unfinished). Moreover, it seems that Green's purpose was to provide an extensive list of terms rather than give detailed etymologies. Hence, the entries are abundant yet concise. There may not be the analytical observations and quotations that one would find in Tony Thorne's 'Dictionary of Contemporary Slang'(the enlarged 3rd edition has just come out)but there are many more words and phrases.
It is true that perhaps any specific dictionary of slang such as a dictionary specialising in the slang of the underworld or Afro-American slang etc. might have a slighly larger collection of those particular terms. However, this mammoth work covers every possible area of slang. Perhaps there are far too many entries on sexual slang (and associated perverted practices etc.) than I would have liked. Yet perhaps the author thought that their exclusion could have made the work defective or lacking in some way. Indeed, it is unfortunate that the connotations of the word 'slang' have changed so that now 'slang' no longer means just colloquial jargon but the obscene tongue. This dictionary is thus also a reflection of this new meaning. However, despite the profusion of dubious/unsavoury entries, the dictionary is also rich in other forms of slang such as criminal slang, rhyming slang, black American slang and post-war slang. There are also many racist slang terms, many of which were first presented in the author's interesting work "Words Apart: The Language of Prejudice" (1996) in which he compiled an immense list of ethnic insults and nicknames. Not only has he incorporated most of these in this great dictionary but he has also added many more similar phrases. For instance, the word 'French', which is often used in conjunction with phrases that pertain to some form of sexual deviance, appears in a wide vairiety of other expressions too: Frenchwoman (i.e. fortune-teller)and French harp (harmonica), etc. The Spaniards also come in for some abuse with terms like Spanish time (unpunctuality), and Spanish waiter (potato) is an example of rhyming slang. Similarly Mexican oats means nonsense and either a Mexican jeep or a Mexican carriage is a donkey. Moreover, the word 'Dutch' (which across the Atlantic refers to someone from Holland, not Germany) is used in phrases like a Dutch nightingale (a frog). There are also several similar expressions with a host of other nationalities such as the Irish. However, for a much more extensive list of phrases with the word 'Irish'(with not only similar jocular phrases but many other expressions besides) one should read the book by Thornton B.Edwards "Irish! A Dictionary of Phrases, Terms and Epithets beginning with the word 'Irish'". His other book "Welsh Nots, Welsh Notes and Welsh Nuts" is a similar collection of phrases with the word 'Welsh' (see my reviews of both of these books here). There are many slang entries from both these books with the words 'Irish' and 'Welsh' that have not been included in Green's dictionary. Similarly Smead's excellent work 'Vocabulario Vaquero' provides several extra slang phrases with the words 'Spanish' and 'Mexican'. Yet I envisage that such missing entries from these and many other books will no doubt be incorporated in any revised supplemeted editions of this great work. Green has already included so much in this first edition. It is a materpiece as well as an invaluable contribution to (and record of) the English language. It belongs to every bookshelf.

Not relevant in 2015! But I recommend another author.

No offense to the author but the one star rating was merciful. This book is outdated and should not be offered as viable information for selling advertising. Referencing using the phone book and "yellow pages" in 2015; enough said about the book. If you're new to sales, I highly recommend books by David Sandler sold on this site.

Excellent book. I have been selling radio time as an Account Executive part time for about five years. The book had some great tips that I was overlooking and am now implementing with better selling success. A master historian treats two most decisive naval battles with the highest levels of scholarship and literacy.

The average reader of World War II history may think this book is outdated because it was written shortly after World War II ended, and thus not in possession of some of the code-breaking revelations that came forth since then, but Rear Adm. Samuel Eliot Morison's brilliant prose and scholarship still stands the test of time, decades after he wrote the "History of United States Naval Operations in World War II."

Then a Harvard history professor, Morison sought to write the history of the US Navy in World War II at the time, on the theory that the sooner he got the stories from participants and the actual logs and information, the fresher it would be, less distorted and conflated by memory. His background of having written a superb biography of Christopher Columbus gave him an excellent background on nautical affairs.

Morison was commissioned a commander in the Navy, and witnessed the invasion of French North Africa, and the Solomons campaign. He met with many American participants right after their battles, and got their stories.

The Coral Sea and Midway volume is as excellent as all the other volumes -- powerfully written, well-researched, stunning evocative of a time, place, and war. It conveys the intense drama of these two decisive naval battles, which shaped the war in the Pacific.

Anyone who wants to learn how to research and write narrative history about war at sea in any era should read Samuel Eliot Morison and study his art and craft.

An excellent period history written when the memories were fresh. I highly recommend this book to any history minded people. It is a shame that so many young people have no grasp of the efforts these people put forward.
