I dig Freud!

Yes, it's true that he pretty much reduced everything to sex in some way or other. But if you go beyond that little foible then you see that SF was one of the most brilliant people of the last century, without doubt. There's a section in here on his analysis of jokes and why we tell them that is priceless. And if you are honest with yourself then you will have to admit that he is exactly right on target. This book has definitely spurred my interest in the field and SF himself. I do think that the author glosses over SF's religious views and writings a little too glibly, as though he thinks that SF really didn't believe what he wrote. I actually think that these are some of the most profound of Freud's writings and some that I definitely intend to pursue further. All in all though, this is definitely worth your time and money.

A fabulous short introduction to Freud's thought

This is one of the best (and definitely among the longest) of the books that I have read in the Very Short Introduction series. I have to confess at the outset that I'm not a fan of Freud. Over the years I've dipped into his work from time to time, but each time have found him off putting and many of his ideas counter intuitive. It was helpful for me to realize that many others, including psychologists like Anthony Storr, also find much of what Freud wrote to be either wrong or in need of considerable emendation. I was always sceptical that our dreams (or at least my dreams) had the kind of structure that Freud insisted that they did. And I felt his reasoning about the sexualization of desires of very small children implied a vastly more sophisticated understanding of sex than I possessed as a young child. I have found the object-relations school to be infinitely more persuasive than Freud on child-mother or child-father attachments, and not just because that school actually saw a major role for the mother compared to Freud. I was also hurt in my explorations of Freud by reading what Storr argues are his worst books, things like MOSES AND MONOTHEISM, which I frankly found absurd, or his book on jokes.

So, my impression over the years was that Freud was borderline silly. I credited him with causing us to take more seriously child development and to acknowledge the centrality of sexuality in our lives, but I found the general contours of his thought to be quite unhelpful in understanding my own life. I must admit that I was also put off Freud by a host of writers who misused psychology in exploring everyday life. I once was talking to my professor at Yale, Paul L. Holmer, about W. Jackson Bates's great biography of Samuel Johnson. He thought it one of the truly great books on Johnson, but was uneasy with Bates's tendency to attribute Johnson's fundamental beliefs to one or another psychological cause, in particular his religious beliefs. Holmer argued that the biographer was justified in examining why someone might wash his or her hands 30 times a day, but had missed the point in attempting to use Freud to explain why someone believed in God.

So, while I understood just how large Freud loomed in our culture, I never found him to be that impressive as a thinker. I still don't. However, Storr did manage to make a case for Freud on many levels while at the same time fairly and soberly pointing out his legitimate achievements alongside his unfortunate failures. He clearly admires Freud while still not hesitating to acknowledge where he went off track. He also does an exceptionally fine job of making clear Freud's main ideas. I came away from the book with a clearer and fuller picture of Freud than ever.

I'm now at the point where I actually want to read more by and about Freud. I have long owned a copy of Peter Gay's celebrated biography as well as his large selection of Freud's writings published by Norton. After reading Storr I'm far more likely to do so. But Storr also provides an absolutely splendid annotated list of suggestions for further reading. One of the best aspects of the Very Short Introductions series are the bibliographies and this may well be the best one that I've seen yet. If I do go on to read more about Freud, Storr's Further Reading will certainly guide me.

This book is a very good general view of freud's ideas, theories, and views. I would recommend it if you are just stating out. It has clear language too. However it is not terribly indepth so be forewarned that it may not meet all needs. It is a good general resource though.

Project Management Professional's review

Practical information a Project Manager can use throughout the process of managing a project is the strength of this text.

For example, Effort Variance Factor describes (see pg 325) how one estimates the productivity variation between a fully experienced Subject Matter Expert (SME) and a Learner. A description of the skill level of each person's skills is provided. This facilitates schedule estimates among varied skill factors.

Another example I particularly use is the Look-ahead Window. This window is a span of 4 to 6 weeks forward from the date of a Weekly Progress Review or Status Meeting. It asks 3 questions of team members: Will (or did) it start on time, will (or did) it finish on time, are there any obstacles? These 3 questions have headed off more than one "surprise" in my projects.

A third useful example (pg 407) is the four-step "Punchline" status-reporting methodology. To sum: start with the conclusion when reporting and finish w/ the explanation. It cuts to the chase - the team and project manager learn the important information first, followed by supporting information.

This text ranks with Kerzner's and three others in my past experience.

Don't waste your money

It is unfortunte that I couldn't rate it lower than a one. I had to buy this for a class. It is poorly written and organized and along with the standard test that comes with this course, the whole thing is a tortured exercise in semantics. Plus, For starters on pg 54 there are "WBS Definitions" and finally on page 58 one is told that WBS means Work Breakdown Structure. It would appear that this author's native language is not English and unfortunately, I haven't yet made sense out of the babble.

Solid and practical...an indispensable resource!

This text and the "Project Process Architecture (PPA)" described within is a solid and effective recipe for managing traditional projects. I have personally used the PPA and Mr. Kapur's materials to deliver successful projects, and will continue to do so in the future.

When I teach students or employees about traditional project management, I give them two books: The PMBOK and Mr. Kapur's textbook. The PMBOK describes "what" must be done, and the PPA answers the all-important question of "how" the PM and the team should plan, execute, and control the project.

All in all, a solid textbook that provides a solid foundation in PM fundamentals.

About the Author
Michael J. Worth is professor of Nonprofit Management in the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration at The George Washington University in Washington, DC. He teaches graduate courses related to the governance and management of nonprofit institutions and organizations and philanthropic fundraising. Dr. Worth served as vice president for Development and Alumni Affairs at The George Washington University for eighteen years, where he planned and directed two major campaigns and provided support to the Board of Trustees for board development programs. In addition, Dr. Worth has served as director of Development at the University of Maryland College Park, as a member of the Commission on Philanthropy of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), and as editor of the CASE International Journal of Educational Advancement, a peer-reviewed scholarly journal focused on the practice of institutional advancement in educational institutions.

Great for beginners

I bought this book by a recommendation from a friend. This book is gives you the basis of all that is entailed to start a nonprofit organization. It also gives you great resources to get more information from. From an operational plan to leadership, this book covers it all.
Unlike some nonprofit books, instead of the author telling the reader which is the right and wrong way to do certain things, like with a strategic plan, he gives you a variety of choices and lets the reader decides what is best for them.
He does not really go in depth in a lot of subjects, but he gives great advice and makes up for it in the other books that he recommends.
It's a great book for those who don't know anything about starting a nonprofit.

Small font a poor decision; otherwise a good textbook

I teach NPM in a university program and find this to be one of the better textbooks currently on the market. I'm planning on testing it with upper level undergrads this fall and abandoning the Ott I've used for years. However, I expect my students will find the small font as annoying as I do, so not sure I'll renew. If so, will have to go to Smith/Bucklin or some other outdated book, alas. With the demand for current NPM textbooks so strong (meaning, those that have kept up with legal changes and management research), I wish the editors had not cut corners by shrinking font size to cram in more text. After all, the goal is to get students to actually READ the text.

Nonprofit Management: Principles and Practice Review

This textbook was required for a course I am enrolled in. While it was very informational and provided details about the nonprofit sector, there was a lot of text and few pictures.

However, each chapter had a summary and a list of key terms which I found useful.

Overall, I would say that this book is well written for a student or anyone who wants to learn more about the nonprofit sector.

I have a 5 year old who has a hard time getting over things that don't go his way. I was glad to try a book that might suggest options to him without them coming from me - as he is often resistant to my suggestions. No miracles but I think we might try reading it every week or more and see how things sink in now that he's in kindergarten. The pictures are fun and inviting to turn the next page.

Excellent Lesson: You Have the Power to Make Your own Mood.

I read this book today to a group of 9 and 10 year old children. They laughed at all the pictures and really got the message. The photographer/author managed to capture human emotions on his animal subjects and apply everyday blue situations to the frustrated and sad photos and great alternatives to the humorously positive photos. The message to empower people to change a blue day and make it a good one by doing positive activities to cheer yourself up is good for all ages. It is simply stated and beautifully depicted with amazing photographs. I had as much fun watching the kids ooing, ahing, and laughing as the kids did. Good message, fun to read, fun to see.
Caution: There is a sister book called "The Blue Day Book" which is more adult in nature. It's topics include work situations and mating. It wouldn't be appropriate for young children. The Blue Day Book for kids is great for any age.

A Family Favorite!

My children (ages 7 and 4) stumbled across this book at our favorite bookstore recently, and I can't say enough about the smiles and cheer it has brought them. I now plan to buy this book as a gift for every child I know (and even a few adults). Adorable black and white photos have managed to capture our animal friends in the most peculiar poses, opening wonderful dialog opportunities in our family. Even if you aren't "blue" this book will elevate the mood of anyone, any age. It's destined to be a favorite for many families.

(For the record, this is my first Amazon review. I usually don't post reviews, although I do write them professionally. When I noticed this book had no shopper reviews yet, I couldn't help but share my opinion with viewers. If you're wondering whether or not this book is a keeper, I can't think of anyone who wouldn't love it! Enjoy!)

Well-rounded tutorial to the use of NDK

Although the name contains the word "cookbook", which to me says the book contains lots of small snippets, this book is actually a pretty much well-rounded tutorial on how to use the NDK. It starts off with setting up NDK on Windows, Linux and OSX, as well as a walkthrough of a hello world project.

The book doesn't tiptoe around the fact that you really can't make a purely native application on Android; even if you use the "native activity", the java virtual machine is still there, behind the curtain. So it's a good thing the book covers the communication between the VM and native code in detail. There is also a chapter that covers the "native activity" approach as well, where you don't necessarily need to worry about the java side.. as much.

Personally, I've only used printf debugging and Eclipse for NDK applications, so it was nice to find a chapter that covers different ways to build applications as well as different options for debuggers.

Plenty of pages are devoted to threading, which I found a bit odd. The book also touches on a bunch of APIs one might want to use from NDK, like zlib, OpenSL ES, OpenMAX AL and OpenGL ES. While the intro to OpenGL ES may be helpful to some, there are complete books about this subject that are better sources for that information.

Finally, there's a couple of chapters covering porting existing C code (libraries and applications) to Android and NDK. These are mostly step-by-step explanations of how to port some specific examples, where I would have preferred to see more of a list of things to keep in mind, pitfalls, what works, what doesn't, that sort of thing.

If you're a desktop application developer and want to get your stuff running on your Android phone, and only want to buy one book, the topics of this book pretty much cover everything that you need to know.

A fantastic journey into Android dark side

The book gives a very detailed and exhaustive description of entry-level, intermediate and advanced techniques that could be used with Android NDK. All chapters, that are more or less independent of each other, explore specific arguments of Android JNI and NDK aspects. For the first time I saw in an Android NDK book the description of OpenGL (2D and 3D) and OpenMAX technologies from a native point of view. This allow you to write Android applications with a very limited number of Java code lines!

In addition to that, the author describes a typical not documented approach in several other Android NDK books: the porting of an existing application to Android with NDK. This is a very useful chapter for people that could want to reuse existing libraries and applications written in C/C++ inside an Android one.

I have to say that this book is not for everyone. You need to be a good C/C++ programmer because there are several required knowledges that must be well known by the reader (multithreading, semaphores, mutex, OpenGL, exceptions, OpenMAX, and so on), but, if you are curious about Android NDK and native code for Android, there are surely some chapters (in my opinion only a few) that could be for a large audience.

In summary, I find the book perfect to make you a skilled Android NDK programmer! In addition, the two bonus chapters (available for download from website) are fantastic (I started reading the bonus chapters instead of the book!). If you love C/C++ language and in the same time you want to build applications for your Android device, this book is for you.

Nice recipes to follow to learn the NDK

This book is a nice introduction into NDK development on Android.
It's written in cookbook style: every example is build like a recipe. It gives a step by step introduction how to build all of them. Every chapter explains the starting steps again and which chapters should be read before trying that specific recipe.
One should follow those examples while reading. This is great when programming with the book next to you but also this makes it harder usable too look up something specific. Especially as only method signatures of API methods are shown but nearly no example code is printed. So you need to have the examples open in parallel. If you like this, this is your book.
The book also explains detailled steps how to setup the environment on different operating systems, it's written independent of any IDE so it builds on command line only.
Don't be afraid if you have not coded Android before. Android specific tasks are explained in depth i.e. taking a screenshot with adb or signing an android app. So the target audience is more the native developer than an android pro. But still for those it gives an idea how the NDK works. But the reader should have some knowlege about C/C++.

Throughout his military career he would be stationed in many different locations, including, New York, Arizona, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Alabama. The first part of his military career was spent on the frontier treating a variety of patients and illnesses. The latter half of his career was spent in Washington DC doing research, teaching classes, and learning of new medical advances. His most significant work was done with the US Army Yellow Fever Commission. Along with other fellow physicians and scientists, Dr. Walter Reed was able to unravel the scourge, yellow fever that had been a mystery since the fifteenth century. This is a book written for a UK market. It presents a wide variety of HR theories and practices, but it is limited in how well it actually explains the concepts. It seems to jump around a lot and does not give clear definitions of a lot of terms. It spends a lot of time on sustainable practices, which is nice, but they do not give as much of a drill down in other areas; especially labor issues.

One of the most helpful books in my LSAT prep

This book was one of the best resources I used (and I used a lot of them) in my LSAT prep. After reading this book and doing the practice suggested in the book, I took the LSAT in June 2015 and only missed four LR questions. I think this book is directly responsible for that.

Purposeful, Missional Work

Almost twenty-two years ago, I packed up my favorite coffee mug, my personal files, and a few samples of my work, and walked away from my career in human resources. Four babies in eight years, homeschooling, ministry, and a huge vegetable garden each year have hardly left time for me to look in the rear view mirror, and I am still at least five years away from an empty nest. However, Your Vocational Credo by Deborah Koehn Loyd takes me where I didn’t bother to go the first time I chose a career. Deborah opens my eyes to the importance of thinking in terms of vocation:

“a creative significant work expressed with deep joy as an offering of love to God, self and others that meets the needs of the world in a significant way.”

Mothering has been that offering of love — truly a vocation for me — made significant by the meaning which God brings to faithfulness in the unseen, mundane duties of life.

But what about the next chapter?

Deborah provides numerous lists of excellent questions to consider in discovering ones vocation, and it is most helpful at the beginning to tease out the different shades of meaning among terms that we use interchangeably: vocation, calling, work, job, career. She goes on to debunk four myths about vocation. My personal Achilles heel is this: “People are called to serve wherever they can find something to do.” Yes, my soul . . . that is a myth.

It seems counterintuitive, but Deborah has argued effectively that ones deepest and earliest pain sets the trajectory for ones vocation. It follows this progression: If pain is allowed to teach us, it becomes productive, leading to meaning. This meaning “underlays the development of passion. Passion that is focused and practically lived out for the benefit of others is called a vocation.”

If you aim at nothing, you’ll hit it every time, so Deborah wisely advises that we take time to think through and write down a statement of the beliefs or aims that guide our choice of vocation; i.e. a vocational credo. Begin by formulating a description of what you do: “I am on this earth to ________________”; or “My passion is _____________.” For example, a worship leader is a “curator who brings human beings face to face with the God of the universe.” A cab driver’s passion is “facilitating moments of hospitality and warmth while helping people get where they need to go.”

It helps to begin with an active verb such as establishing, solving, teaching, facilitating, or creating. Then, considering that first pain, a favorite quote or book that encompasses your most important values, and the dreams you have of how to heal the world, let this vocational triangle lead you in writing your own credo.

To keep her readers from getting de-railed, Deborah has identified some extremely helpful areas of caution:
1. Toxic skills — Those areas in which we can do well and even function with a certain degree of skill, but that bring us no joy. Obviously, everyone has to do things that they don’t enjoy sometimes, but a skill becomes toxic when it oversteps its bounds and stands in the way of an individual doing what she loves to do.
2.Fear of failure — Living ones way into a vocation demands trial and error, and, therefore risk of failure. Thomas Edison did not become famous for inventing ten thousand ways NOT to make a lightbulb, but all that error was a necessary step in finding the one way that actually worked.
3.Vocational preferences — Your Vocational Credo includes a survey for identifying the most satisfying means of living out one’s vocation. It is based on ten vocational preferences and incorporates core motivations and possible pathways for fulfillment. For example, I think my main preference is Communicator, which means that my core motivation is “to make the world a better place by learning, teaching, showing or demonstrating in order to bring new thoughts or experiences to others.” Possible pathways of exercising that would be educator, writer, life coach, artist, crafts-person, designer, musician, songwriter, or comedian. They all sound fun!

The challenge after having found and stated ones vocation is, in Gandhi’s words, to “be the change you want to see.” This happens through investing in others, particularly in the next generation. As a Gram-in-training, I have been reflecting on this, for I believe that my next new task in mothering will be the transition into new ways of building into my families’ lives and the lives of others. Frederick Buechner has identified this succinctly and well:

“The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.”

This is the nature of our generous God. We have the privilege of making an impact on the world, and we do it with joy, knowing that we are serving the good of others and that, in doing so, we bring Him maximum glory.

Called to Be Myself.

Here is a book I've read cover-to-cover but am not done with yet: Your Vocational Credo by Deborah Koehn Loyd. In the past couple of weeks I resigned from a position I held for just short of a year and I am taking the time to reflect on my shape and life purpose as I discern next steps. Loyd's book has been useful as I try to find a new place to serve in my passion. Loyd, is a church planter, pastor, teacher and professor at George Fox and wrote Vocational Credo to help others distill their calling by composing a 'vocational credo.' A Vocational Credo is a short statement which describes what what we were put on earth to do.

Loyd wants to enlarge our idea of vocation from thinking of it as a call to particular location, what we get paid to do, a super spiritual breath of God type experience or a non-specific generic view(39-40). Instead she argues, "Vocation is speaking or living from the truest form of self. Vocation doesn't merely happen to us from the outside in a blinding light from heaven or an official 'call' from God. That sweet spot of significance suited only to you must be discovered from the inside as well. A thorough inner exploration is necessary because it will allow you to bring your most energized and creative self into the future. It will ignite passion in your soul that is specific to you. When passion collides with God-given opportunity, you have the elements of vocation and the power to change the world" (18-19).

So Vocational Credo involves inner work, so that we can serve God as our true selves. Loyd shares her own discovery of her calling as she probed the depths of past painful experience, her values, and how her passion, anger, joy revealed the particular way God called her to bring healing in the world. She invites us to take a similar sort of journey by creating a personal 'vocational triangle' reflecting on how our 'first wound' sets the trajectory of our calling, our personal values (which may be revealed to us through a favorite book or quote) and the way our shape allows us to respond to the needs of the world around us. By paying attention we can craft our credo: God created me to _________________ so that __________________.

Loyd also offers practical reflections and insights about 'toxic skills' (things we can do well or need to do but feel drained by), the gift of opportunity in chaos and change, how to discover our personal vocational preferences, and leaving a legacy as part of our calling.

This book proves to be a practical tool for leaning into everything God wants to do through you. My undone-ness with it means it has alerted me to some inner-work I still need to do. For example, Loyd is poetic about the way pain sets the trajectory of our calling and she shares vulnerably about how her childhood experience of abuse silenced her voice. As she worked through the trauma of those experiences, she saw ways that the things that broke her aroused anger toward injustice and suffering which offered clues to her discovering her true self. I have spent some time in reflecting on how pain has shaped my journey and can point to some hurtful moments, but I don't have a clear sense of how my 'first wound' shapes my life passion and purpose. I agree it does, but I have more work to do.

So I've read and commend this book as a tool for self reflection and discernment but I haven't composed my vocational credo (to my satisfaction) yet. I give this four stars.

ONE OF THE BEST I'VE READ - AND I'VE READ A LOT

I am one of those people who coming out of High School, had no idea what direction I wanted to go in life. I dreaded the inevitable question at family gatherings, "What are you going to do now?" Shortly after I graduated, through an amazing set of 'circumstances', I encountered Jesus and my life was revolutionised. Finally I had some sense of direction, so I went into the ministry for 12 years. Having completely burned out at the end of those years, I found myself once again facing the prospect of, "What am I going to do with my life?" The question has become in many ways now a quest both for myself and people I engage and counsel. I have studied and read every major book and publication and website and blog I come across. Now let me tell you what I think about 'Your Vocational Credo' by Deborah Loyd. This is one of the most entertaining books on the topic I think I have ever read with great, real life stories, that lead you down Deborah's trail of discovery. But far beyond entertainment is the rock solid process this book will lead you through. It truly is one of the most insightful, personal, and 'rubber meets the road' practical discovery guides I have come across to date. Following Deborah's process, you will learn to articulate your vocational credo, gaining clarity on things that are there, in your life right now, that are divine keys to unlocking your calling.
