On October 28, 1973, 11-year-old Jonathan Kushner hopped on his bike and took off for the 7-Eleven. Jon's four-year-old brother, David, stood on the sidewalk and watched him peddle away. In the Aftermath of the Unthinkable

I caught the tail end the NPR interview with David Kushner this morning and names and places jumped out at me. Immediately I downloaded a copy of Alligator Candy and began to read. I was a teacher at the school David Kushner's brothers attended and I still have vivid memories of that terrible time in October of '73 when Jonathan was missing and then when he was found. Kushner brings back the time vividly -- the grace of his parents, the coming together of the community, and the feeling that a time of innocence had been destroyed forever.
Kushner recounts the loss of his brother and the impact on the family from his varying perspectives -- as a four year old at the time of the event, as a teen, trying to fill in the blanks of a factual account, and as an adult, trying to understand the why of such evil.
Uplifting seems an odd word to use in connection with a brutal murder but the story of the Kushner family in the aftermath of the unthinkable is just that -- uplifting. Thank you, David Kushner, for showing the strength and beauty that can rise from great loss.

Survival after a horrible murder.

I purchased this book after experiencing the murder of my son. The circumstances were different as he was not abducted but it was a random act of violence. The wrong place at the wrong time as Jon. As a parent you always wonder what this will do to the victims brothers and sisters as they go on with their lives. Parents and families of this kind of death are thrown into a world that is no longer safe. Life is never the same and the effects of this heinous act are felt for years to come. The family seems to have dealt with the aftermath of this relatively well. They were a strong and close family to begin with and that I think helped them cope. As a parent I think you walk this tight rope after something like this is cast upon and you try to give your children the best guidance forward but you can never escape the pain that murder causes. Very well written and thank you for sharing your story.

I couldn't put it down..

Thank you for such a complete novel of your experience, your research, and especially for sharing your emotions in such a real and honest way. Your words allowed me to explore my own grief that I have not yet fully embraced: The loss of my husband of over 30 years just over two years ago. We lived in Tampa Bay and moved in 17 years after your brother's death. You bring your story of life and memories of places I know. Including "The Woods" I played in when I was a kid. The "loss of freedom" happened to my own son and his friends after the unsolved murder of a 12 year old girl named Jennifer Odom who was snatched in front of her house in Pasco County in 1993: It also changed the community forever.....
